I would not be picky about which area of specialty to go into as a new grad. To get the jobs we want, we have to start from the bottom and gain the experience to perform competently. So with that, I will be glad to take whatever job I can get (and I'm sure equally glad to move on to something different after paying my dues).
I plan to start in critical care. My college is apart of a large healthcare system that hires their graduates with is a major reason I choose to go here. I worked in critical care in the military so that is one main reason I want to go into critical care but I would like to focus also on pain management. I would like to go into pain management research after I have some years of experience.
I think a lot of that mind set depends on the area of the country you're in. I know several people that have gone right into a specialty after getting their ADN. I plan to go into Hopsice or Mental Health, there are several places in Wisconsin that are hiring ADN graduates based on their preceptorship experience.
Many many people start out on a Med/Surg floor in a hospital to get a year or two of experience before going to a specialty area as well. It really depends. So don't lose out hope that you might just go right to a specialty.
Pretty much no problem going into a specialty here as long as there is a job open! I do have a preference for women's and children and pretty sure I do not want to work medsurg/reg adult care...So my plan is to apply in this order 1)NICU 2)L&D, 3)Nursery 4)Peds/PICU, and then go to adult if nothing available. I've heard both ways, get that year of a solid medsurg experience, but I have also heard that if you absolutely know you want to work in a certain field, you might as well go straight for it.

I know several new grads that went into ICU, ER, Etc.. As long as there is an opening. My choices are very similar to yours.... 1) NICU, 2) nursery, 3) peds/PICU, 4) ER
My first pick would be...like some of the other posters...Mother/Baby especially NICU if not my first pick I would settle for Labor and Delivery, Nursery, Emergency Room, ICU, CCU, Pediatrics, PICU, and Medical/Surgical
To be honest I might just play it safe and do the traditional route...of dedicating at least 1-2 years of my first years out of nursing school to a Medical/Surgical unit and then move on from there...I do pray though I am able to get into Mother/Baby if I can...if not Medical/Surgical units are the way to go for many new graduate nurses

I'm still in the nursing progrAm and I'm just wondering if I got my ADN degree whcih area would I go into since you can't really get in your specific intrest cause facilities want experienced nurses almost all times.
