After I graduate, we would love to move out of state (we are presently in Arkansas). Where would be a pretty place to live; reasonable cost of living; plenty of trees and lakes; all four seasons, but not forever long winters? We have been thinking about Oregon and Colorado, but isn't the cost of living high in these states? Our dream home would be an old country house or cabin somewhere quiet. Any suggestions?
For God's sake -- don't ever move to Evansville, Indiana. Most utterly boring, featureless (other than the muddy Ohio river) landscape ever.
We don't even have cows to look at-- cuz the fields/farms all flood every so often when the Ohio overflows.
Worse yet. Don't get a job sitting in a cubicle in an office basement in Evansville, Indiana. :)
Can't wait to start flying to Syracuse, NY in June (for nursing school) -- yippeee!!!!

John Coxey- I know what you mean about Evansville- I lived there for a short while...lol.
I live in KY (in Louisville, though. It's fairly citified, believe it or not). The outlying county areas are beautiful, and the cost of living is low. We've been house hunting, and in the outlying county areas, I've found beautiful homes in the $100s (with acreage) that would be in the $300s in the City of Louisville area.
John, NY is beautiful. Passed thru Syracuse several times when I lived north of there. Gets real cold, though, so plan to dress warm! I would LOVE to have a summer house in the Thousand Islands area! Take the short drive north of Syracuse to Alexandria Bay some weekend. It's really nice.
Lived in Alabama a short while when we were stationed at Fort Benning, GA. Does northern AL get as hot and humid as down by Phenix (spelling?) City? Do they have those huge, viscious fire ants?
Thanks for the replies, everyone! Y'all crack me up! Hannasmom, how's the cost of living in Portland? I want a great big house for a little bit of money. :chuckle
Asheville North Carolina...all the things you wanted, four seasons, low cost of living, some of the most beautiful mountain views. You can be so far out in the country you could walk out on your front porch nude yet only 15 minutes from the city. I actually live 30 minutes south of Asheville but the whole area is wonderful, I wouldnt want to live anywhere else. Check out this site
i've gotta agree w/ lgflamini here. Kentucky has some absolutely beautiful areas. I lived in Bowling Green for several years, went to school there, and still have family there. (i'm in Chattanooga, TN now, which I don't like so much but that's a whole other matter) Cost of living in KY is fairly low, Bowling Green is a cute little town, about 50,000 people, with a large university and a small technical college. It's about 1 hour north of Nashville, TN and about 1.5 hours south of Louisville, KY. Oh and about 1.5 hours away from Evansville, IN, which I agree is a pretty boring city, except for the casino boat. Anyway, sorry for the rambling. Bottom line, KY is very pretty, not too expensive and close enough to big cities for weekend excursions, etc. Good luck, I hate moving!

It's beautiful where I live, but the cost of living is ridiculous. I live about 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe and I love it. We have four seasons (winter being my favorite), low humidity, gorgeous scenery, and lots of snow in the winter. But it's too damn expensive to live here so we are looking at places like Spokane (I'm looking at Gonzaga University to get my Master's), Idaho (Boise), Oregon (Portland/Salem), Colorado (Montrose or Colorado Springs), and Las Vegas. All but LV are very pretty places to live and LV does have it's own charm!

Alabama believe it or not is one of the most beautiful plces I've ever seen. 2nd in geographic diversity to CA. The only thing they have that we dont is desert. We have beautiful beaches in the south, beautiful mountains in the north. Very green in the summer and we have lotsa hardwoods so beautiful colors in the fall. Itt gets cold in the winter, but not much snow. Very low cost of living too.
