Where's a pretty place to live?

Published

After I graduate, we would love to move out of state (we are presently in Arkansas). Where would be a pretty place to live; reasonable cost of living; plenty of trees and lakes; all four seasons, but not forever long winters? We have been thinking about Oregon and Colorado, but isn't the cost of living high in these states? Our dream home would be an old country house or cabin somewhere quiet. Any suggestions?

I personally am a mountain girl. I'm from TX and got tired of the heat, so we moved to Colorado, then Wyoming, then Illinois, then back to Wyoming. Am contemplating moving to Idaho/Eastern WA. Here's a GREAT site to help you find where you want to go.

Here in WY is beautiful, we love it, but its a depresed economy. There's tons of fishing, hiking, snow stuff, great summers, cold winters, wonderful falls and springs. But it depends on what you are looking for in where you live ya know??

CO is nice, but way expensive there to live. Housing market is AWFUL. its insanely high.

Almost all of these cities I have looked at in the past and would consider moving to almost any of them! I sent my husband this link as well to have him take it and see what he comes up with..it will be interesting to see if his results are similar to mine!

You are welcome! Its funny cuz my DH and i took it seperately and had almost identical as well! We got places in Idaho, East Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Alaska! lol Its a fun little quiz to take if nothing else ya know?

North Central PA Wellsboro to be exact but make sure you let me knoe so I can get the $1000 recruiting bonus. Check out Century 21 .com zip code is 16901. We have a few lake in the county olus we are within drivng distance of NYC Philadelphia nad the finger lakes of NY state. wintert is only about 4 and 1/2 months. :) :) :)

Just my personal experience but, I've lived in many pretty and not-so-pretty places all over the country. Seems like the pretty places always cost a lot more or, they're so isolated that you don't have modern conveniences, like shopping, nearby.

After awhile, that killer view or gorgeous neighborhood isn't what you notice anymore, because you're dealing the grind of high rent/mortgage or hauling it to a store that's miles away.

Now I'm trying the cheaper, not-so-pretty places with great convenience, while making my home more "pretty" with the money I save.;)

Mountain living is tough, at least in Lake Arrowhead, CA, which is supposed to be one of the fancier mountain communities in my area. No home delivered mail or garbage pickup. Only two grocery stores where prices were high. You often had to drive half an hour for other shopping. Not to mention the constant fire danger, which finally hit in October.

Never could get used to that snow or ice either. The last straw was when my husband skidded out on some ice and the car went over a cliff (yes, we had snow tires and 4 wheel drive). The only thing that saved him was a tree.

We moved. Hopefully you'll have better luck than we did.;)

I have to say most of washington is beutiful, always green green green. The rains not to bad, you get used to it. Some parts dont even rain that much. Cost of living is lower. Pay is not to bad, 20-25 an hour. I really miss it there, live in arizona, just not the same. sure every state has its beutiful things, but wash is simple gorgeous.

I live in so. oregon and I love it. Beautiful outdoors hiking, fishing, camping, biking, skiing, etc. All four seasons, kind of grey and rainy in the winter but not as bad a portland or eugene, imho. don't really have anything to compare housing too, but I just bought my first house one year out of school with hubby making less than I do so we do okay. I agree with much of what miljrn said...the school systems are having issues right now so if you have school aged kids that would be something to look into. But I love where I live. Areas with land are available and if you don't mind a little drive to work you can have an area of land for decent prices...

Born and raised in Ohio, myself. Lived in California for a few years & moved back here. It's beautiful in several areas, has all 4 seasons and friendly folk. The midwest is a good place to live...a lot of variety & seasonal changes. Also not too expensive.

If mountains are more your cuppa tea, the hills of KY are beautiful, or you could check out N Carolina. For the rockies...try Montana or Idaho. Although they do get heavier winters out there.

I, personally, love New England & wouldn't mind living up there in Vermont or N Hampshire, but it is a bit pricey up that-a-way.

Thanks for all your replies! And thanks for that cool "findyourspot" site, SnowymtnRN! My DH and I are having fun with it. I completed the quiz and it shows my best spots are Washinton and Oregon with some Alaska, New York, and Virginia thrown in there. I know Alaska is out; can't wait to visit there, but can't have all that snow and super long winters. My DH and I are going to compare lists when he gets home tonight. He said his list was mostly Washington and Tennessee.

Thanks, again!

This is a cool thread, I too am always looking for new places to try out, currently working as a travel nurse, and exploring the country, native of KS, which is nothing exciting to speak of there, and then drove out to northern california, and i have to say, Utah was pretty, and so was wyoming, and of course, northern cali is beautiful, but really expensive to live.....im definately thinking of checking out oregon and washington, currently out near boston and new england is great too, but i couldn't handle the winters here year after year...

here's another site to check out what places fit you

thanks for the info, everyone!
