When circ's go bad...

Has anyone seen a circ go really bad? I saw one today where the doc took too much foreskin off and the skin on the shaft ended up "degloving" from the fascia underneath. A urologist had to come in and do "damage control." The people I've talked with say they've never seen anything like this happen before.

NO, not a typo. He has decreased sensation and for some reason, goes numb before he can get there

I think in Alberta it's running around $110 right now. Because of short stays, many are being done after discharge, so there were very few done on the unit. The board was there and one doctor would do it very infrequently.

between the hospital costs and pediatrician cost, the procedure ends up costing $300+ in my hospital! We have patients on Medicaid from two states; it's covered for patients from one state but not from the other

I think she means typo because you typed "organism" instead of "orgasm".

Jwk, no I don't work in surgery. Does anyone know how common this is? I know a fair number of men in my life and I don't know any of them being circed as adults. Even my friends who I talked to working in LTC and med-surg haven't seen it.

Balanitis, phimosis to name two reasons.

You obviously don't work in surgery.

How come they don't have the problem of needing a circ in European countries that don't circ out of routine for these problems. One problem here is that as soon as someone sees and uncirced baby boy or young child they want to pull the foreskin back. If it is left to separate on its own these problems become rare. And in England I believe they use creams to treat (steroid creams I think). Sometimes I think the drs here in the US only know how to treat these problems with circs. Personally I would fly back to the UK for treatment for my boys before I would let a dr circ them. Luckily for us our ped is not US born or educated and knows how to deal with uncirced boys.

I have heard stories of nurses pulling back a babies foreskin to cath in the US. I have been told by some of my European friends that they don't pull back the foreskin to cath unless the foreskin has already separated. Not sure about these because I am still a prenursing student and have yet to cath anyone. :chair:

Where i work, we average 4-5 adult circs a week.

That really shocks me Marie. According to what I've read, Canada only has about a 35% circ rate, the US is around 65%. (I'm originally from Canada). Yet, it's the American nurses who see all these adult patients coming in for circs. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I do remember a man I looked after as a student who needed to use a topical steroid cream like Ayndim mentioned for phimosis, but from what I understand they are very effective. I wonder if this is sort of like hysterectomies for women (I sort of wonder if they are done a lot more than necessary by some docs).

I haven't scrubbed in on many of them, but, i could tell myself that the guy needed it, at least on the ones that i've seen.

Yup, I wonder too, along with c-secs, episiotomies, etc etc etc

I don't work in OR, but when I was in the surgical ICU I used to read the OR schedule everyday, and I was surprised at how many circs were done on adult men. The vast majority were over 50 yrs old too.

I wonder how those men were treated BEFORE they were scheduled for circs. Adult men being circed is really a foreign idea to me.

A few years ago where I used to work PP, there was an impatient OB, who decided she would circ a newborn with a hydrocele within the first 12 hours of life. She ended up nicking the scrotum, urologist had to be called. When confronted by the urologist, the OB wouldn't listen to a word he said, turned around and walked away.

What a @#%*!!!

Right - it's a foreign idea, meaning you haven't heard of it and have little knowledge of it, yet you automatically assume it's worthless. What would us men do without you women telling us what to do with our manhood?:rotfl:
