Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!
Henessey, Cognac... Doesn't everyone want to name their child after their favorite liquor?
Even sadder..... an Asian couple wanted to name their son Shitdic.....not sure of the way they intended to spell it....myself & my tech kindly explained that this name wouldn't be the best choice for a child growing up in the US, they understood & changed it.
Calliope is actually fairly normal.. It's just not common. It's from Greek Mythology, Calliope was a muse. She was supposed to be Homer's muse for the Iliad and the Odyssey... It's pronounced ka-LIE-oh-pee.
That's the full first name of Dr. Callie Torres, character on Grey's Anatomy. First I ever heard of that name, but LORD her middle name is atrocious: Iphegenia ... ... thank goodness this is fiction!
I honestly went to high school with a Richard Head, but the funny thing is that I never found it to be an unusual name ...... nor did he undergo any level of ridicule from what I recall, especially being that it was an all-boys school
... he was actually a nice quiet guy.
This is a real person, she is actually on a social networking site, sans the Maya. That's all I am saying!
I went to high school with a guy named Mike Hunt (one either has to have seen the movie "Porky's" or say the name out loud to get it).
I know a girl named Nakunta Kinte. Kinte being the middle name...
When I was younger, I knew a man named Dick Tester.
When I was in nursing school on of the rotations throught the OB department one of the mothers named her child Candida.
Yes, Calliope isn't all that unusual, but she pronounced it "cal-ee-oe-pee".

Iphegenia was also the first name of the fictional Mrs. Doubtfire (played by Robin Williams).

Candido is actually a semi-popular name for Latino boys, though personally I never liked it. Sounded very 70's thuggish
I worked in an inner city primary care clinic..
