I love wound care, and spending time getting to know my patients (their concerns and feelings, their health history), and assessments.

I like discharging patients. I love telling them that it's time to go. Please leave. Here is your prescription, bu-bye...

I love dressing changes and wound care! The nasiest wounds excite me. I also love providing patient and family education on things they will have to do after discharge. Things likes dressing changes, emptying drains, and trach care can be intimidating for pts and/or family. I enjoy teaching them how to do it and having them return demonstration. It gives them confidence that they can really care for themselves/loved ones once they are at home.

When a new mother has been waiting days/weeks to hold her new baby for the first time, and I get to be the person who puts him/her in her arms. :)
Or finding the pretty, colorful, soft blankets that haven't been washed for the 100th time, to make my beds. That really makes my night.

My absolute least favorite thing is anything in the way of trach maintenance:banghead: The smells, sounds, & secretions etc just are hard for my stomach to handle. Give me the sick chemo patients, palliative, and hospice patients any day over a trach:twocents:

I love extubating patients.
My favorite part is when the patient finally is able to speak.
The transformation from an intubated patient to an awake and talking one sitting up in the chair is my favorite part.

I love starting IV's...I'm pretty good at it, but when I see a nice vein and I can't get it started...what an ego blow. I also love flushing IV's and pushing meds through IV's(basically anything that has to do with IV's is my favorite thing to do on the job). I also sometimes work on the oncology floor, I love making the oncology patients comfortable even if it's giving them a glass of water. I also LOVE discharging oncology patients, especially if they have been on the floor for weeks.

Starting IVs - prepping is a time to get to know the patient and forge our relationship and then I love it when I get a smooth clean start!
I also like disarming nasty people at work - Pt, co-worker, MD - whoever - when they try to get under my skin or they say something nasty I always use humor to lighten the moment or kill them with kindness and don't let them steal my peace of mind.

seeing patients come in at their absolute worse (such as with REALLY bad-sounding lungs or s/p STEMI or something) and then getting to see them go home. I love the fact that *I* helped make a difference in that patient's life.
