Im just wondering what would you do? whats next?

Specializes in Operating Room.

I don't know yet. Not sure if I want to be an NP or be in leadership. Time will tell.

Specializes in LTC, Agency, HHC.

Well, I am just almost a year out of school, so I plan to take a break for awhile. I'd like to go back in a few years to get my DNP with a focus on midwifery....however, finding a job in L&D as a "new grad" is (so far) impossible. My LPN experience doesn't count. So, right now, I am content where I am.

I'm still a new nurse, but after I finish my RN-BSN, I will probably work for a few more years in the ICU and then start a masters program in nursing education. I really want to teach nursing clinicals and nursing lab. Maybe in 10+ years I will consider going for my NP, but who knows!

Specializes in L&D.

I am currently a first semester BSN-RN nursing student and my current goals are to graduate (of course), work 1-2 years in med-surg (or anywhere that can get me extensive experience in a critical care setting) and then apply for my MSN to become a FNP. I am in the greater houston area (beaumont tx) so hopefully job prosepects look good for me when I graduate! My ULTIMATE SUPREME goal is to open a clinic directed towards womens health for the underprivileged and lower socioeconomical classes of my area.

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, hospice.

I don't know. I would like to go beyond the BSN but I don't want to be an NP or CRNA.

Specializes in Psych, LTC/SNF, Rehab, Corrections.

I dont know. I'm an LVN. I start my ADN program in some weeks. After that? I'm BSN-bound.

...and after THAT? I don't know.

I haven't explored enough of nursing but I do need an escape route. A backup. I dont care to be a nurse supervisor/charge on a floor and Ive had about all that I can take working the geripsych sweatshop. I love my residents but I'm tired of skeleton crews and it's only going to get worse with these boomers. Never been to ICU but every RN that does hospital work at my job...dislikes it. Understandable. I never much cared for the hospital, either.

I had interest in being a CNS but my supervisor talked me out of it...as if it's being phased out or something. If I ever go advanced practice, CRNA is the most realistic possibility. I know what they do. Their work is challenging. I like it. It's within my abilities. I can get into crit care. Annual salary is good so taking on more school debt makes sense. It's a good risk.

I kind of wish that Id gone to EMT or Paramedic school instead of CNA school, for this reason. Don't both groups concern themselves with advanced airway management...and things of that nature?

Research is another option. I just don't know how to break into that specialty. I've even considered PA school.

Hopefully, I can find a nurse job in an area that makes me happy and stay in it until I drop. Then, I wont have to bothered with 'more school and debt'.

Specializes in Med-surg, Infusion.

My advice is to work for one year in ER, or more importantly, ICU. I did not do that, I was only a med-surg nurse, no acute care experience. Now, 13 years later all the jobs I am interested in require acute care experience :(

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

I don't understand, med-surg is acute care

Sorry, meant to say critical care, not acute...oops

Back in the day , I would have said ," H3!! No ! " I could go on and on ,but not to long ago , I finished my BSN -It took me alil bit ,but with the university following the "Disney Land " business ( make everyone happy ) model it wasn't hard at all. Needless to say, since I have a great computer ,tablet, Android phone, a few good contacts, and tuition reimbursement -Why not ? Cause we all know, all good things come to an end . Maybe it is just me, but I'm just going to stay in school until the hospital's money runs out . Besides , " The Man " is going to keep raising the bar ,and taking time and money from us all. My ultimate goal is to have a multiple Masters Degrees in everything nursing. So, if you have an online school -I'm on my way. Forgive my grammer mistakes - I didn't use one of my contacts .

Specializes in Internal medicine/critical care/FP.

i went and got my masters as an np. Unless you want to do research I don't really feel there is much use with getting a dnp or phd. I could be wrong though.

Specializes in Nurse Leader specializing in Labor & Delivery.

If you want to work in upper management in a hospital system (CNO, that type of thing) then a doctorate is very useful.
