  1. Ok, been at my present gig for over 20 years-have won many awards , etc. - Yes, at a Super Platinum Five Star ( I know I'm forgetting something- Oh , yeah Joint Commission Approved ) Magnet Status Luxury Hospital ( we wash cars too ). Now for my point , do you think you could get hired again at your present job-if you went through the interview process again ? That being said , the HR interview now is nothing short of water boarding and polygraph compared to when I went through. To answer my own question , I don't think I would have a chance. Not now with all the hoops to jump through . Last time I checked , there is a certain "Look " that seems to be prevalent also.
  2. I can tell you why- Starts with College/University Professors not being honest with students. Not taking time out and taking the authority hat off and telling it like it is. As a guy that was former military (USMC ) our instructors told the truth - like sometimes help isn't coming and things may/will go BAD ( want to say more but may offend ) . For example , if I was an instructor I would love to explain that depending on where you work , forget most of what we taught you - "Just Survive the shift " and remember ABC's and complain later. Survive ,survive
  3. Business always wins against nurses
  4. This is my strong suit - I was built for this game ! Oh, I must say this is a good one. Over the years , I have become an expert at ,"Giving the people what they want ! " My hospital loves me for it too ,and have received multiple awards in the past. The secret is pass the buck after trying to explain once and only once-Yes ! For example, pt asks , " Can I smoke weed in here ? " My response is ," Hold on -let me find out ." See the key words , "Hold On ". I never said ,"No" . Get someone else higher up to explain policy and tell them ," No ". Try this one as an answer , " Let me go see ." . When it's all said and done , the surveys/letters are more important than even the care you give. My Super Magnet Teaching hospital will take a wonderful survey , instead of infection prevention any day. Matter a fact , we better kiss the pts family and friends ______ too. So many times , I have seen great nurses get punished for rightfully promoting policy . So , in the end , be on time , say nice crap in meetings , and give the people what they want all with a smile - you will be a Titan .
  5. Chamberlain online was the best thing that happen for me , as well as, my hospital . So many of my fellow staff got BSNs and MSNs from Chamberlain online . Truly an awesome experience. Nothing like ( much like here ) posting for school from your cellphone , tablet , or computer. Going back as soon as I pay off this last $1000 . My answer -Accelerated
  6. It is a joke ! Fear the Feds and laugh at Joint Commission We had a hospital here in Chicago that had to be shut down by the FBI-where was Joint Commission ? Where was Magnet ? Where was etc. ? However , it took an entity outside of healthcare to shut it down. Go figure, I am sure there are other Hell hole hospitals harassing nurses about visits from the likes of above -only to really fear the feds. Furthermore, I have worked in five star dumps that clearly there was more wrong than what we were harassed about prior and during a visit . Again, where were theses "Jokes " when this happened ? To get to the point , these guys were putting tracheostomies in pts that didn't need them for profit. Chicago doctors, hospital owner arrested in an alleged kickback conspiracy | WBEZ 91.5 Chicago Another hospital was fully accredited by Joint Commission to be shut down by the feds- Hospital shuts down services after patient safety violations - FierceHealthcare
  7. Well , in my day orientation would go like this Day One : Following a nurse Day Two : The nurse I just followed the day before calls in sick. Now , I am on my own and staff tells me if I need any help just ask. Advice : Take care of the pts whose family members raise the most Hell -just ask your CNAs for the lay of the land. Then , just survive .
  8. Want to look ,and feel like you are making a difference once a code has started ? No other , than the "Flush Man " . Yes, the "Flush Man " is in it to win it -other than the CPR guy. When the code is over -good or bad - you looked amazing during the code. Plus, no signing forms , not out of breath , etc. -you are free as a bird.
  9. Matter of fact, my nursing back ground is much like yours ,and I have been doing dialysis since "95" . On that note , I now , for the pass decade have been doing bedside dialysis just to keep my skills up. Ok, the pay is what I get paid hourly , but even though I'm at the bedside I'm really in charge of my dialysis machine while the primary nurse catches Hell . Sad, for the primary nurse , but true .For me , dialysis and Netflix work well together. One last thing , remember outpt dialysis clinics ( if over 6 chairs ) can be like assembly lines , I started in one that was 40 plus chairs and that equaled pain . The usual problems mostly everywhere - short of staff ( even though there is a load of resume ) , bad equipment , and you know the rest .
  10. Ok, all this owning up sounds so good , so Florence Nightingale ( would have been laid off or fired along time ago ) -but I have seen nurses for simple mistakes hung out to dry. Yeah, yeah, yeah - pt's advocate and all that -please. Most hospitals don't own up -working you understaffed , bad equipment , adding more to your workload , etc. , ( dare you to complain -go ahead I'll wait ) and all the while holding your pee for the last seven hours you accidentally give ______ . No one is the wiser and pt still looks fine. NO WAY AM I SAYING ANYTHING ! By all means , you can be that standup person and your name running wild through the high speed grapevine. Plus, not to mention written up , or let go. Naw, I'll pass .
  11. Dealing with ," That one family member " -you know the one that has nothing else in life to do ,but hang around the nursing home. As, I said before , I have been around and " That family member " is at all LTC facilities -Who's job is to bug you everyday about something ,and don't be the new nurse. As, for paper work ,among other things , it's going to be what it's going to be. Heck, I use to have 60-64 pts by myself-admissions , people going out to the ER ,and at the end of the day-I miss a few meds here ,dressings there , and maybe some paper work -Come On ! They eat these meds day in and day out . What complain ? Yeah, right ! Just take care of the wheels that makes the most noise. Matter of fact , I quit a 5 star (really had 5 stars) let the chips fall dump , that paid really well and they just wanted nurses to show up -even late. No back door over time too . I was young ( early 90's) ,and thought it was going to be better out there -Not ! Could have been watching even more Netflix .
  12. About the same here -Bass fishing and Hunting is what I do to keep my balance. Got me a 62inch bull moose up there in Alaska about seven years ago.
