Saw this thread in the Male Nurse forum and thought it was a great idea. What is the first thing you'll do in terms of purchases when you're officially a nurse. I would like to start heavily paying off my student loans, save up for a house, and get weekly pedicures! What about you?

I bought some new clothes, put a huge payment towards my biggest loan, and put some money into savings with my first paycheck. I hadn't gone shopping for clothing for myself, except for a graduation dress, in the entire time that I was in nursing school, so I thought that my wardrobe could use some updating .
I'm still putting money into savings, I guess that my first big purchase is going to be a house (or something wedding-related, I'm engaged now and I wasn't then)!

Scrubs that aren't blue.
I actually look forward to buying a new car, mine has been well used over the past 13 years.

If I don't get accepted into school this summer, I will get them now. If I do get accepted and start this summer I am going to get them as soon as I get out of school. I figure by time I take the NCLEX and get my license I will be healed and ready to go!

I will start putting money away for my son's education. I'll graduate when he's 14, so that gives me 4 years to get his college paid for. I already have cars, house, marriage, and my college paid for, but not a cent for him (as you can imagine, I'm quite a bit older than most of you).

Like rubato, I already have a house (in fact, we're getting ready to downsize soon!), cars, marriage, etc and I won't have any student loans when I graduate (nor will my boys when they graduate from college: one in 2013 and one is 2016) so we're planning a lavish vacation. Not sure where yet, but something along the lines of an African safari or a leisurely trip through Italy. After that, all of my paychecks will go straight into our retirement account and we'll continue living off hubby's salary.

Plan a trip to Japan. It's been my dream to go there but never had the means to really consider going. Even after getting that nursing paycheck it'll take a bit to save for it but I will at least know that it is within reach! :loveya:

I have seen many new grads get in trouble financially because that first paycheck seemed like a million dollars compared to no paycheck. Exercise caution, at least till you finish your probationary period at your job. It is so nice to have something to look forward to after all that hard work, isn't it!?!
