What did you do for work during school?

Published

First and foremost, I apologize if this is the incorrect location for this topic or if this has been posted already, but I was just curious...

What kind of jobs were you working while you were in school? Right now, I am taking the prerequisite courses and working freight overnight (10pm - 7am). I would like to have a job that is in the same field as if I were to become an RN, while I am in school.

Any suggestions? And what did you do?

I was a CNA.

When I started being a CNA, I had never even considered becoming a nurse. A friend talked me into it... under much protest from me.

I worked as an aid in a PACU, lots of moving patients. I got to see good pain and airway mgt, as well as a few emergencies here and there.

It really helped me but it's a hard transition going from an aid to a RN. A lot of things are the same, but there's so much responsibility now. Ugh.

I hear ya, andrew...it's tough, but I believe that it makes you MUCH more comfortable when it comes to patient care...I always put the focus of my conversations on the patient when I talk to aides...it makes it less personalized..

I worked at a call center for the first half of nursing school. Now I just work as a nurse extern. Our hospital has the best scheduling system you could ask for: there is a big calendar and you just sign up for whatever shifts you want to work. I float so I have gotten to work in most areas of the hospital. I think it wil definitely make me a better nurse and help with school in the coming year.

I wish...I have the option of working or not working...What did I choose...NOT!!! I don't think I could function with hubby being an over the road trucker, kids 6 & 2 and school full time...Where would I find the time? I would fail before I would begin...I am curious to hear some other responces...

That's what I did until I finally beat my male ego down enough to accept my wife's offer of not working while in NS. It was hard, but losing my 4.0 GPA after pharmacology class made me see the light.

Did not have time to work. I was in an Accelerated BSN 20 month program, with around 18 credits a semester. Save the headache and concentrate on school if anyone is joining a full time program. I got an RN job 10 months before school was over with no previous healthcare experience.

I had my husband to support me, but I was a Certified Childbirth Educator before I became a nurse, so I taught Childbirth and Breastfeeding classes while I was in school.
