  1. Uh, I realise tha you are only 22, ahhh, so very young! Are you kidding? STAY in HI., if you need privacy go to another Island. Do you know how many people would kill for your job, even if the econ. was swinging and every nurse had his/her choice of work envir. bla, bla, bla. Learn to scuba dive it will change your perspective and THAT will be the only thing you will want to do on your days off. Sounds to me like U are in the perfet position. Life is short sweetheart live if to the fullest. The gods have given you the Golden Lamp Stand. Don't throw it to the wind, just to become an RN (more repsonsibility, snow up the wazzoo, and a chance you will never see HI. again). I realise that money is not a job satisfier (sp) but, a many an RN/LPN would want to slap some since into your brain (spoken with love). Just my $c-notes worth. One of the replies to your posts mentioned working in the Ghetto. Let that sink in REAL good.
  2. As far as i can find GCC is not either (LPN).
  3. I have read on several different posts, that someone would rather work at WalMart. Let me tell any and all, who even entertian this thought for real or for the sake of being sarcastic. Walmart is the beast. Walmart has a turnover rate of 79% Why, because the Mgmt of Wally World needs this in order to save money. WM. Made $300,000,000,000 in revenue in 2005 (not sure about 06,07,08,09) The average salary of a WM employee (non mgt.), according to them, $9.50. Now, assume that one starts off at $7.25 (the minimum wage 2009) It would take a WM employee 6 years at a .40 cent raise per year to make $9.50, This is not only laughable but, totally insane and criminal of the Corp., (taking into consideration the amount of revenue the co. brings in every year). Secondly the Asst. Mgrs. in every store are given a quota they must meet every single month. That quota is, to write 1 to 3 employees up for something every month. This ensures that they one, are doing their jobs as asst. mgrs and 2, it starts the ball rolling to bing in a new employee at a lower cost to the company. If everyone in their departments are doing their jobs and following the rules, they still have to find someone to write up. (read btw the lines) If you are smarter than the Asst. Mgrs. Watch out! You will have a target on your back and you will not last long in any store. Walmart for the most part hires their Asst. Mgt. team from within and sends them to a 12 week school to learn how to be an asst. mgr. This also insures that the person who is chosen has no bargining power when negotiating for salary. Wally World already knows what you make. So they hire you for the asst. mgr position and give you $32,000 to start off, one must work no less than 60 hours a week the first year and one can be moved to any store in the country, no questions asked (albiet they do pay for the move). Some say by the year 2050, that 1 and 5 people will work at Wally World or know someone who has worked at Wally World. If you shop there, have you noticed that the prices have risen a bit. WM knew the minimum wage was going up, so they started raising their prices, piece by piece, over the last year to compensate. It is said that if Walmart raised their prices by .01 cent on every single product they could afford to give every single employee a $1.00 raise (1 million employees) do you think that any employee of WM got a $1.00 raise on their paycheck when the minimum wage increased? Hell no. Please, if you hate nursing that bad, get out and do something commenserate (sp) with your education. Don't even kid about working there, it may just happen, then you will REALLY be in a world of %$%& You have been ForeWarned.
  4. Ask, who is the Command Master Chief and call him/her. If he/she will not give you his/her name, then find out who the highest ranking person is in the office and talk to him/her. You can also go on the web @ www.navynursecorps.gov and get a phone number of and talk with a Navy Nurse Corps Officer recruiter. The latter would be prefered. The Navy only excepts BSN prepared Nurses at any time. If you are an RN ADN you are out of luck.
  5. If a man ask for your shirt, give him your coat as well.....
  6. Why do RN's sell themselves so short? One needs a professional hand, Bull Malarky !!! If a Doctor can be trained to suture a lip, hip, or hand so can an RN. My Father used to say " I can't, never could." It is the skill they don't want RN's to have so the RN can't bill fo the skill !!!
  7. So what's the problem. One can buy a suture kit on the internet, and then watch how to do it on Youtube. Simple sutures are not that complex. If the doc assesed the pt and then gave the go ahead for the tech/RN to suture, well there you go. I beleive that RN's should learn how to suture in school. I believe that all RN's should be trained as field medics as well. Why not? If in any small town or big city where a catastrophic situation arises, and hundreds or thousands have to be triaged and treated, then we as a society with the medical knowledge should be ready and capable to handle those situations. Where would one get the practice to be prepared? When one is handling everyday problems.
  8. opps, stated above, meaning stated by others post to the thread posted. The post directly above mine is well, the correct perspective. ugh.
  9. Something to add to this post. Not all Prisons or Dentention centers are like what is stated above. Some of these things may go on in the facilities that these people have worked at and experienced. Not ALL are like what is described. All depends on where you work.
  10. I keep reading alot of this non-sense on other threads. I believe that it is all propaganda. ICU, ER, Trauma, etc. areas of nursing are, or so it seems so burned out and synical by/about the system in which they work. That they will put down another NURSES' area of interest and work. It is comparing Apples to Oranges in the same industry. Who's job is harder, who is smarter, who is....Bla, Bla, Bla, The questions: are you happy and are you trying to make a difference and are you making a living ? Very simple concept. JM2C.
  11. pagandadeva2000, All Nurses. Ever here the phrase "A nurse, is a nurse, is a nurse." There are over a million nurses that practice right now? My number could be skewed but, at any rate. I believe it is so vitally important to this profession to have a National Union to keep the gov. from capping wages at some point. Take a look at the salaries of Nurses in England. Heck, even doctors cross the pond don't make what a doc. makes here. It boils down to nothing more than who will control the future of the American Nurse Profession "Politicians" or the "Workers" (Money, always Money). I would say to all Nurses. Better start organizing and put personal differences and attitudes aside. Look at the UAW union, the politicians pander in their favor over and over. Why, because they slap that politician in the hand with some green and use the other to pat him on the back. The only disadvantage to them is, the corporations can ship every single manf. job overseas. They can not send the sick overseas. They can however, immigrate forgein trained nurses here. Only if, American Trained nurses don't stand up and say absolutely not. One can NOT do that, with out some REAL clout in D.C. Their is POWER in NUMBERS and it is a numbers game. California - not sure but, did they not step away from the ANA and form their own state union, which by and large has capped pt ratios and outlawed manditory OT etc., in that state ? BTW, please don't misunderstand my statements concerning Nurses who may be from another country, if you are a citizen or are now at this time going through the patriotic process of becoming a U.S. Citizen, that is just dandy. I am talking about a down right under handed ploy, to give working visa's to a forgein trainind nurse to fill a gap, or to just get rid of those who may oppose a wage cap, due to a Nationalized Health Care sys. yada yada yada.
  12. Commuter, your make a great point, let me throw you some food for thought. Supply and Demand does wonders for an industry subset. Look at the Software industry. Employment rise for lpns? sure, why not. But, will there be an opportunity cost associated with the rise of needed services? YES. Let me explain. Opportunity cost, is to forego an unknown opportunity for a percieved better opportunity. Our Congressional Idiots, and the Lobbying groups they, tenderly care for and support, are at this very instant talking about a Nationalized Health care system (opportunity). But, who looses in the end. Policeman, Fireman, and Teachers have alreadly lost with minimal pay and the Nurses will as well. Who controls those professions pay? Local gov., who depend on subsidies from the fed. who then dictate matters of policy and ultimately fiscal spending. The pay sucks and in some locations ain't worth it. Now, as far as Nationlalized Health care (under the guize of HC reform act or something clever) The gov. will put a band aid on a gapping wound. Nothing is free, mind you. So, you say "What is your point Already!" Well, I am glad you asked. An RN/LPNs position to a hosp. bottom line is the MOST costly, (payout/liability). Where do you cut cost, hmmmmmm let me see. Oh I know, you can fire all of you staff. Ah, NO, but you can cap the wages of the staff, to control/lower cost. What is the average RN pay nation wide? About, $50k. how about a cut to the average GDP of $36k before taxes across the board (just what we all need, a pay cut), all the while the cost of living rises. Average mortgage in America 2009 is $250K, plus other life expenses (gotta have Internet, right?) The Gov. Never sticks its dirty little fingers into a pie, unless they can manipulate the circumstances to their favor. Lobby groups, corporations etc. who give the most campaign contributions and keep the politican employed; they get the gov. contract. Now that you already control the military (constitutionaly) and the Police, Fire, and how our children are educated. You now move to control the banking and the Healthcare and we have a Socialist society. Trying to better yourself through education, entrepenuerial spirit.... forget about it. Right now, the Nurse Profession is ripe for a Nationalized Union. I don't see a gov bankrupting the skilled services of a Nurse, like they have for the Auto industry. UHC is inevitable but, there needs to be an entity that holds the long arm of Big Brother in check. The Nurse profession, at this time in our nations history, wields great power in their favor. Thankyou, I'll be here all week.
  13. Did someone get their feelings hurt here?
  14. Yes, Hosp Corpman, will probably in some form or fashion, at one point in their tours/careers handle a number of clinical practices that CNAs, Med Tech, RNs/LPNs, and PAs all perform on a daily basis. I feel writing your state legislature or Gov. Will not do a bit of good. Although, I have read somewhere that Cali. allowed those in the health care ratings with adv. NECs/MOS's (all branches) can challenge the LVN State Board. But, it boils down to MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. Politics are strongly invovled in those who make the decisions. Think for a moment. If I could join the military for 4 years as a Hosp Corpman, then walk out and get a job paying $25.00 an hour as an RN. Why would their be a need for CNA,MA LPN, RN,BSN,MSN, RT,PT,PTA, of study in our Nations CC and Univ. Yes the Military will train you for a Job ---to do IN the military. The only enlisted profession that I know of in the Navy, that one could litterly walk out of the military and not have a 2/4 year degree in that profession and get a well paying job, is the Navy's Nuclear program. Sure, come join the N.A.V.Y. (Never Agian Volunteer Yourself) we have many job selections all of these may POSSIBLY carry over into a civilian career. "You have a bright future, in the United States Navy". I would not trade my time in the Navy for anyting. I've been to 12 different countries and had great liberty in all of them. It paid for my Bachelors degree. But, life is not about a piece of paper one holds. It is the experience and journey one goes through. Live life to the fullest. Time Enough for Love_ by Robert A. Heinlein. "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."
  15. Oops, don't get the wrong idean here, if the BSN has not gained the ADN first. Who would have more clinical time BSN vs LPN?
