So everyone is talking about the vote in California to raise the nursing ratios. I have a feeling it is going to pass, especially in this economy. The hospital my friend is working for is obviously speculating it will happen because they are already making plans for how they will raise the ratios for if this happens. I bet you anything that they will not even give us our LVNs or aids back (for those of you not in California, when the ratios were lowered most hospitals got rid of LVNs and CNAs). My friend says that if it passes she is going to go into home health and leave the hospital. I was just wondering what other nurses will do if this passes.

I don't live in California, but I am so sorry to hear this. Other States need to implement patient ratio's for patient safety. Somehow, in the name of money, it always lands on nursing to take the brunt of budget cuts.

This is the first I've heard of such a vote. I did a quick google search and didn't come across anything indicating that such a measure has qualified for the ballot nor that signatures are being collected.

I checked the website of California Nurses Association, and don't see any reference to this.
It might be possible. Talked with a different friend at lunch today that works at the same hospital as my other friend. She heard the same thing but could not find anything on line about it. Just said the nursing ratios are up for vote and that the hospital is pushing for increased ratios...

yeah I think if it was really happening the CNA and other organizations would make a big stink and we would hear about it.

Last I heard CNA was pushing to lower ratios in some areas (i.e. LTC).

I am very involved w/ the CNA as a nurse rep @ my hospital. We just finished negotiating a new contract. I have been told NOTHING about any potential change in the ratio language. I have asked our union rep (he has heard nothing about it either). I think that this is something that a hospital has come up with to intimidate, confuse, & divide nurses.
