your a new rn making over $500 per 12 hour shift????????????????

I also find this very, very hard to believe since they work in a state that has a very poor track record of salaries. This has to be gross, and I still find this hard to believe. A new nurse making this, come on now this is a bit too much to swallow.

i also agree with most above. i'm a student too, and i am always anticipating and preparing my next move. while this forum has been very informative, as soon as pay is mentioned, someones always gets sensitive. why do i have to bust my butt in school and owe money for loans and not know ahead what i'm getting myself into? of course nursing is hard work. of course you have to care and love what you do. at the end of the day, you have bills to pay and a family to take care of, and how much money you make does make a difference.

i'm not sure if this is positively the reason why, but maybe this is the reason why nurses are so underpaid. some don't know how much do are suppose to make. you can be a nurse for 20 years and be making the same thing as a new grad, and you wouldn't even know it unless you ask.

I happen to enjoy this type of thread I like to know what others are making so I can judge if I am being paid fairly according to my area. As an example I just found that new grads are being hired in at a higher rate that those of us with 2-5yrs experience. Because I now have this information I have taken it to the "powers to be" to get a cost adjustment. Knowledge is power and we all need to band together so that we are paid what we a worth! Otherwise this nursing shortage will only get worse, honestly I love my job but if I am unable to make enough to care for myself and my household I will change professions. It is an insult to me when I found out that my sonogr. tech, or rt or xray tech, is making more an hour that I do!

Well, to add my two cents in, I have been a CNA for 10 years now. I feel that this poster has the right to ask the questions she inquired about. If you don't wish to respond then don't. I have read some of the posts questioning her dedication to the profession; I have seen plenty of nurses come and go, and no matter how dedicated you are not going to work for peanuts. I do not make nearly the money I should make for the work I do in 8 hours, but it is the route I took early on in life. When I finish school, I expect to be paid according to my worth, because I will have the education to back me.

Speaking for myself, I know I'am dedicated to nursing, it took me a while to get the nerve to go back to school, but I did it. It's nothing wrong with trying to find out what you can expect your pay check to look like.:thankya:

Oh, and while you might 'lose' your license for something, I hope you never 'loose' it. Just one of my pets named Peeve.

HAHAA! That was too funny.

I personally do not understand the problem with telling us ball park what you make. I can see that by someone asking it could bring up the issue of Why do you want to be a nurse. I personally want to because I am passionate about nursing among many other reasons. I do have a suggestion to you chioma829 http://www.salary.com. I use the site to see what I can expect when I move to another state. I know where I am now a new nurse out of school can expect about 21$ and hour. The cost of living here in Fort Lauderdale has gotten out of control. So while this is more than fantastic for a starting salary I will still may never own a house. I have done many searches for cost of living calculators and they are HUGE helps as well. I would be curious to know does anyone find that where they are they don't make a good living and are finding it hard to live and support themselves? I think that with the demand and what experiance I have I can go just about anywhere and make it just fine.

Sorry for any typos, grammar errors it is late here, and well I did not spell check.

A new nurse making this, come on now this is a bit too much to swallow.
Especially a new nurse with only 3 months experience who lives and works in Missouri...

1.Type of nurse? RN NICU

2. How many hours u work per week? between 24 and 36 (24/week but I often pick up extra)

3. How many years of nursing? 2

4. What Shift: 7p-7a

5. City and State: GA

6. Average 2 week gross pay: gross 1200-1900 net (after 401k, taxes, health ins) is 750-1150.

You will find that taxes are a killer (obviously.) And, the more you work the more they take, so dont kill yourself doing 50 hours a week because you wont see most of the money from it. Overtime is taxed at a different tax rate, just like bonuses, so I find i would rather have some semblance of a normal life than make some chicken change killing myself.

Also, cost of living doesnt reflect pay in many areas. There are places here in the southeast that are VERY expensive tpo live in yet, I make more living in an area that is much less expensive. I look at my brother in DC who makes far more than I do yet what his income can get him is a 1000 sq foot condo, which is 2.5 times as much as my 1800 sq ft home. I found nurses in his area make about the same as me. If I lived there, I might be able to rent a 1 bedroom.

There needs to be changes in the field of nursing. The "doesnt matter what we are paid.....it is a calling" mentality is why we have nurses working in despicable/dangerous working conditions for chicken change.

I am willing to state what I make because when I was in your position I also wondered what kind of lifestyle I would be able to look forward to. Coming from a very poor family, I was lookng forward to a job I loved and an income I could live comfortably with. No none chooses to struggle and not be able to take a nice family vacation or buy a home. No one want to do the work we do and have the responsibitity we have for 12 bucks an hour. I worked as a waitress at a very well known hotal chain and made more than that. I didnt get a college education so that I could live paycheck to paycheck.

I have found that salary.com is fairly far off because many nurses dont work 36/week, some work in an office, with home health, etc. The pay is very different in these areas, so getting a single number to say what nurses make is unreasonable.

I wish you the best of luck in school!!

Lets not get petty here and say someone is lying. SHe/he was nice enough to offer up personal info about herself to help the OP.

Geez ladies! Put down the shotguns already! If you're offended by the post -don't respond and move on. I find it more insulting the arrogant 'you should know better' attitude from you mother hens out there. We all know that a "true" nurse is one of compassion for the patient. We also know - that nurse Betty needs to be able to put a roof over her head and make enough money to do so. Anyone in their right mind no matter how compassionate they are would be an idiot to not look at the whole picture before deciding to go to school for at least 4 years of blood, sweat & tears, and a school debt to top it all off. What and then find out in Kentucky you only get paid $9.50/hr. Please! I love my patients - but get real!

Yes, there are websites, books, and several other sources that several of you think should be referenced before you're bothered with such nonsense. However, one of the wonderful things about this site is one can post questions and concerns and those who thoughtfully and sincerely want to HELP in your quest will do so...

All the others should back off and stop playing english professor, Miss Manners on Ediquette, and step out of the 1950's when women didn't 'discuss such things'. Get over it already!

Let's just do everyone a favor - if you don't want to give your info - don't give your info...but if you don't want to let your salary out of the bag, keep your 2 cents in there with it. I'm now leaving my soapbox! Thank you.
