I wouldn't go so far as to say that money isn't important to me...I'm not one of these nurses that wants to be sainted. I'm not even offended that the OP wants to know how much people make-I just choose not to answer because I feel certain things are my own business. Plus, it's not like the info isn't out there and unless he/she is in my part of the country, working at my hospital, the info won't be much help anyway. How's this? I make enough to live comfortably-won't be rich, but enough to pay bills and have some fun now and then...
OHMYGARSH!!!!!I've just blown about an hour reading all these posts thinking I was going to get a good idea of salary ranges. Much to my bored delight, I was entertained by the foolishness of some and the graciousness of others.
What I havent been able to understand is the argument of posters who state that it is poor manners to ask others what their salary is. Yes, this may be true if you are asking your neighbor, accountant, friend, etc.
But this is an online nursing forum that is soley for discussing different topics regarding the nursing profession. If you are curious about a nurse's salary, you dont ask her while standing in line at the grocery store! You come to websites like this one and post your question/survey! That is what the OP did, for Pete's sake!
If you are embarrassed or if you think we will figure out who you are, just answer anonymouse-ly! heehee---grammatically incorrect!!!:trout:
If it offends you, then you can go on to the next thread! And why were you looking at this thread in the first place??? Ah ha!! Caught you!!!
You wanted to see the answers didnt you!?!?$!?!$
$$$ Would that be considered poor manners??!! $$$
I think that these types of surveys are completely valid for this type of website. It offers the chance to get a peek of what's going on around the country. I didnt find salary.com to be close to what salaries are in my area.
Btw, I'm still a RN student so my income is negative $5000 to negative $10,000 annually at this point.

So, Im glad I was able to get that off of my chest and add some spice to this uh, entertaining and sometimes informative thread.
Speaking of chests - It is definitely poor manners to discuss the size of them!!!!
Peace
PS
I love this site. Thanks to all of you who share your knowledge here.
Sooooo funny...lol...lol.
Another hint, grasshopper, now go do your research....I make less than a doctor and more than a CNA(figure if I'm going to be accused of being difficult and unreasonable, dammit, I'm going to oblige:lol2: ) Only makes me wonder what some of these people are going to ask about next. I can just see it now "Has your sex life suffered since you became an RN?" "How many yeast infections have you had in the past year?" Sheesh...You can call it being merely curious...I call it good ol' fashioned nosiness..Oh and calling someone foolish because they don't agree with you? Now THAT is poor manners.
I have a very hard time believing that you don't have a ballpark figure of how much nurses make. Out of those of us who feel it's a personal matter, not one of us said anything deragatory-I simply stated that you have to realize that certain matters are sensitive topics. The OP was wondering why she wasn't getting answers from everybody and I offered her a suggestion as to why. You have to realize that you will deal with many different beliefs and ways of thinking as a nurse. You might think something shouldn't make someone "sensitive" but everyone doesn't think or believe as you do. Trust me, your career will go much more smoothly if you realize this. Done posting on this thread by the way..I'm headed into work where I make....Ha Ha not gonna say!i also agree with most above. i'm a student too, and i am always anticipating and preparing my next move. while this forum has been very informative, as soon as pay is mentioned, someones always gets sensitive. why do i have to bust my butt in school and owe money for loans and not know ahead what i'm getting myself into? of course nursing is hard work. of course you have to care and love what you do. at the end of the day, you have bills to pay and a family to take care of, and how much money you make does make a difference.i'm not sure if this is positively the reason why, but maybe this is the reason why nurses are so underpaid. some don't know how much do are suppose to make. you can be a nurse for 20 years and be making the same thing as a new grad, and you wouldn't even know it unless you ask.
I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. Are there some who are just upset to find out what others are making? This is a professional job here and it really surprises me that we can't act that way when talking about something like this. Aren't we on this site to talk and help each other, not belittle them? I don't care how much anyone else makes, but those of you who act like it is a sin to talk about it and you are so much better than the rest of us..... I don't think I would want anyone with that type of attitude taking care of me as a patient.
Oh, by the way.
I am an RN- for 1 year (after working as an LPN for 8 years)
I work in the ICU.
I am in the midwest area.
Take home is somewhere between 1300-1500 biweekly, including differentials since I work 12 hour nights and I am in charge most nights(full time).
I love my job, I have been around the healthcare field all my life and have been working in a hospital since I was 13 so I wouldn't do anything different with my life (unless of course the powerball numbers came my way) :D
Everyone just needs to lighten up!
Be happy nurses:nurse:

I understand what you are saying and I agree with some of it but the fact is that many people that are going into nursing now days are taking out HUGE loans. I am interested in knowing how much I might potentially make because I want to know if I will be able to pay back the 50K I had to borrow to get my BSN and also be able to support my two kids that I'm raising on my own. I am going into nursing because I couldn't imagine doing anything else and it is a bonus that it pays fairly well. The fact that it does pay fairly well certainly played into my decision to become a nurse because I have two other people to think about besides myself. I don't think it's wrong to want to know how much you're going to make when you're finally done. Just my two cents. :)
I am a new grad and will begin my new career next week. That being said, I find it disturbing you would post a survey regarding salaries. If you are studying nursing for the salary then you may want to rethink your decision. I certainly would not want you taking care of my family member if it is about the money. I chose to become a nurse because of my compassion for other people and my desire to make a difference. I have sat on the other side and know first hand the true value of a nurse. At the end of the day I will not be counting the money I earned, but recalling what I did, or what I could have done better. To be perfectly honest with you, I can not tell you off hand what my hourly rate will be. All I can say is that I will be part of a profession that I am honored to belong to. You see, I truly wanted to become a nurse for the sake of working in that capacity. There are plenty of other professions in which you can earn more and by all means will have less responsibility. In my opinion, if you are worried about the salary now as a student, nursing is not your calling.
I am a geriatrics charge nurse that splits a 60 bed unit with another nurse. I only work weekends-16 hours shift. I'm paid a special weekend rate called the Baylor Program.Small Survey1.Type of nurse?I am a lpn

Please stop it with this pettiness! I did not outright state that any person on this site was lying. In fact, you are the only poster so far who possessed the audacity to even mention the word 'lying'.
When someone says "it is hard to swallow" I take that as saying they dont quite believe it...that has always been the context I have have heard the phrase used. If that is not what you or the person who made the comment meant, then I apologise.
And yes, if someone is saying that someone might be bluffing, then I DO have the audacity to call them out.
I have enjoyed reading all these posts.
I still find it astounding that some posters are still clinging to the idea that somehow, financial interest and nursing are in conflict.
Yes, one becomes interested in nursing for reasons that the general public doesn't understand, and it takes a special person to do the job. How many people can look at a GI bleeders last offering in a bedpan and NOT run through the door screaming?
However, I'm not about being a bedpan handler, and it might be a "calling""
that got me there, but it is my brains and expertise that understand the myriad physiological processes and potential actions that are reflected in that bedpan; and THAT is what I am being paid for. It took me many years of study, reflection and sheer hard work to be the nurse I am.
It is precisely because some people don't think my skills are valuable that a nursing shortage exists today.
