True. Lots of ways to not pay a lot for school, or to be totally debt free. I don't owe a dime.

What an LVN is allowed to do really depends on where they work. At the hospital I worked at I was doing IV pushes from day one (even as a GVN). I also worked Labor and delivery (started in this area as a GVN also), ER, and ICU. When I read your post about LVN's, I get the impression that you think LVN's are incapable of performing their jobs without constant supervision. There are good LVN's and RN's and there is bad LVN's and RN's. Nursing is a hands on training, which you learn from other nurses. Just my 5 cents.

The hospital or unit that you worked may have allowed you to but the state board might consider it outside of your scope of practice.

I don't understand why people are taking out such huge loans to pay for school. My loans are miniscule compared to figures I have heard here.

I thought that most nursing students were really good students and thus eligible for scholarships, grants and work-study type aid. I used a combination of the Montgomery GI Bill, grants, workstudy and loans to be able to attend college.

I know that more non-traditional people are going back, but still, if you look around and apply at every opportunity, someone somewhere will give you a break.

Being a good student is usually secondary to documented financial need. And since most nursing students have a work history, they show up as needing less money than a generic unemployed teenager. Loans are available, but not much else, for an 'A' student who's not poor. Of course, by the time they graduate, the 'A' student has become poor. :)

The only scholarship I ever got was $250 from Medical Personnel Pool when I was working private duty through that agency. Happened to see the application when I dropped off a time slip. I used the money for law school.

Las Vegas RN 26 an hour. What is the best way to make the most money in Nursing?

1.Type of nurse? RN, med/surg staff nurse

2. How many hours u work per week? 32-plus occasional bonus shifts.

3. How many years of nursing? 3 in med/surg, 4 1/2 more elsewhere

4. What Shift: Day, Evening, nights, or weekend only? Nocs, 8 hour

5. City and State- CA, Bay area Peninsula

6. Average 2 week pay- Gross: last paycheck with one 8 hour overtime (plus all of the differentials that I can't keep track of) 4187... what I brought home after taxes etc: 2638 :smackingf .

I feel I personally pay for many social programs with my taxes. But I am grateful for what I get to keep. When I started nursing new grads were only making 16 an hour in California. I have come a long, long way and still have a long way to go to the end of my career.

14,000$ left on my student loans and counting (down from 26,000$).

All the LVNS were allowed to push pain meds and certain other kinds of meds. Every state is different on their rules about what LVNs can and cannot do.

though they may be good students, a good percent of nursing students do not qualify for aid. not everyone wants to be in the military, thus negating any help from uncle. grants are only available in increments that fin aide "think" you deseve based on income or merit. some people don't qualify on income or merit. woorkstudy can be a iffy, especially if you are doing a four year degree which costs money and you're only making 5.15 to 7 p/h and can only work 20 hours max per week. which leave loans. not everyone is afforded the same opportunities to pursue their degree(s). many take different paths and one should never compare their situation with someone elses.

Herrera's reply scared me to death. I cannot imagine a LVN being allowed to push ANY med, anytime, anywhere.

Sorry, you don't have the same licensure, education or training as me. It's not about you as an LVN needing constant supervision. It's about the fact that under MY rules of practice, I AM legally responsible for all that you do.

Understand, please.

First of all, YOU are not responsible for anything that I do. Every Rn I worked with had no problem with my nursing capabilities, so there is no reason for you to be scared. I have had a Dr personally request to my RN supervisor that I labor his L&D patients when I am on duty. RN is 1 more yr of training yes, But you do not learn everything while you are in school. So much of nursing is learned by hands on experience. I am going to school to get my bachlors in nursing. I am glad that I took the route I took. I was a nurse aid while in LVN school. Being an aid really made me appreciate my nurse aids when I worked at a hospital. Being an LVN while getting my RN degree will give me the same prospective.

LVN's in Texas have a storied history of excellence and a wider scope of practice than in most states.

I haven't seen any RNs from NY (specifically, the metropolitan area and Long Island region) responding...any chance one or two of your can reply to this post?
