What do you think about my interview experience?

Published

Hello fellow RN's I am in need of advice on how to respond to a Nurse Manager which I had an interview with.

Here is the story,

The interview was in early December. When I arrived there was no room avail for the interview, the manager and i wonder around until we were place in a conference room. Soon after the interview started we were interrupted a total of 5 times by staff members. One interruption was to placed another interviewee in the same room to wait to be interviewed so she was listening to our meeting. Another interruption was to place another manager with her interviewee in the same room to have their interview. So now we have two interviews in the same room and one interviewee waiting to be interviewed.

At the end of our conversation I reiterated my interest in the position and hopes to hear from the manager soon. This was the manager's response "Ohh you will hear from us"!

This is the bottom line: I have not heard from anyone since then as of today. I sent the manager a well written thank you letter and did not received a response.

I have called more than you can imagine to check if the position has been filled this is what I have gotten so far:

1. I couldn't get a hold of the manager and couldn't even leave a msg on her voicemail. So i called the receptionist and was told by the receptionist that the position was probably filled.

2. When I finally got in touch with the manager she said, "didn't you called yesterday" i said "yes"

she didn't even allowed me to tell her my name and explain that i called but was not able to talk to her. Anyways she responded with " I though I told you it would be 3 weeks" with an arrogant demeanor.

3. I continue to call and was told by receptionist that a letter was sent out to all interviewees. But i have not received one.

4. I called back the manager and this was her response " HR should be sending you guys a letter this week" what does that suppose to mean?

5. I still haven't gotten an acknowledgment by mail that the position has been filled or not even a word by mouth of the manager.

At this point i know that the position has been filled off course.

But I am somewhat disappointed that the manager didn't even give me a feedback on how to improved my candidacy in the future. Also, at some point I felt that she gave me and enthusiastic false reassurance at the end of our interview. By the way, she did not acknowledge my thank you letter which is a bummer!

Should i be given an apology for the lack of organization and interruptions during our interview? I didnt get one.

The truth is i presented my self with maturity and professionalism although I looked very young and I am a graduate nurse I hope this was not taking into consideration for the fact that I was not giving the dignity to at least be informed by mail with a "thanks for your interest but..." letter .

I am thinking of sending this manager a detail letter about my impressions and was wondering if anyone has any feedback. should i even bother sending her a letter?

OMG stop calling like that.. even if you had a chance, you blew it!

And nO do not send any more letter to the mgr, this is borderline stalking now

Let it go and move on, usually a thank you letter and one follow up phone call is sufficient. It truly does not sound like a good organization to work for anyway so don't bother with anymore follow up. Keep your chin up, you will find a job :)

I agree with the other posters, this is not the kind of place I'd want to work for.

Sounds like you would be better not working there. Very unprofessional behavior. I think you shouldn't contact the manager anymore, and if she would speak to a potential new hire this way then she would treat actual employees even worse. She has no people skills. Sometimes being the better person is just you doing what is appropriate no matter what and just moving on and ignoring the other person. If it had happened to me and I was offended enough to complain, I would write to upper hospital administration, not the manager. End even then you might want to think twice if there is any position in any other department you think you might want a job in. If it is a small hospital or she wants to retailate against you, the managers will pass your name around and "blacklist" you from working there.

Good Luck.

tHANK YOU![

LOL...

Thanks for the advice. I called at least once a week after 2 wks of being interviewed. I did not mention that I lost my drivers license after interview. Not sure if it was given to me back after photocopies were made. So i have to call for that as well and still didnt get any call back.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and constructive criticism.

From what you have said, all those calls...would seem annoying to many managers. Following up is ok, but in future, I would try to avoid as many calls. There is a fine line sometimes. Good luck with your search though.

No, you are not owed an apology. If hopes of an apology are the reason that you want to write a letter, I would seriously reconsider, if I were you.The nursing community in any city or town is a small one and word travels, even between facilities. Calling excessively and writing an angry letter will not serve you well in your job search.

Following up and "calling more than you can imagine" are not the same thing- it sounds like you might have blown it for yourself with the excessive follow up if they hadn't already decided to go with someone else. Most places won't give you feedback on how to make your application better. I didn't receive a letter from every position I applied and wasn't unsuccessful for: I got some but a lot of the time you just don't hear back.

I think it's safe for you to take the hint that you were not selected for the position. DO NOT send a letter complaining- move on to the next application and be a little less demanding in your follow up.

I am a new grad as well and also very young. I have interviewed for three positions, and never received a phone call back, email, or letter. One nurse manager even told me I made the biggest mistake of my career by not getting a job the minute after I graduated. You just have to keep applying and move on. I think being young and a new grad is a double edged sword at times. :D It will get better!
