What supplements do you take for nutrition to get through the day?

I feel so much better when I take my vitamins. Do you? What do you take?

In a nutshell, I take:

Mulitple vitamin and mineral QD

1200 mg Calcium with 500 mg of magnesium

120 to 600 mg (the later for driving a long trip) of gingo biboli

400 i.u. of Vit. E

500 to 1500 mg. Vit C (the later for feeling the need for extra protection)

Green Tea with Echinacea if I am feeling run down or want added protection

An estrogen vitamin replacement PRN called Estrotimes (it works fabulously for those flash moments)

I used to see an Acupuncturist regularly but have not in over 6 monthes due to unavailibility of having one. He would give me additional herbs. Honestly, I seem to be doing just fine without them.

I now refuse to work nights; Working nights was @#$% on my body and mental health. I work frequently but when I am off I rest a lot and drink lots of fluids. Trying to eat mostly veggies and low sweets (I struggle with a chocoholic tendancy when I want/have to be naughty).

Any ideas on weight loss suplements?

I would love to hear how you take care of your health! Please make comments!

Happy, prosperous, and safe New Year to you ALL!

In peace,

I take "One-a-day"-women's formula multivits. They have extra iron and calcium. Also, when I am feeling a little run down or like I might be coming down with something, I take "Wellness Formula." It's a herbal defense complex made by Source Naturals.

Drink lots of water and green tea!

nightngale,

Thanx so much for the tip about Estrotime. Found the website and I will be ordering.

In my earlier post, left out my best "supplement"--prayer!!! Works wonders when you're down and out, but always best when used consistently and liberally!

no no nights.. even my blood sugar starting going "off".. I tested it @ 70 one time... all I wanted to do was eat... my body was SO confused...

Love the idea of the PNV.. I will try that after my regualr vit/min supplement runs out. I also buy those prepackaged supplements for days I am in a rush and need to just stick something in my pocket for later....

Energy bars are a great snack for me when I need real nutrition instead of junk at work.

I also take that Chondroiten combo for when my ankles ache... it seems to help....

Anybody tried Metabolife356 for "energy" or weight loss? Just wondering, I have a friend taking it and swears by it. HMMM?

I take a multivit and calcium (when I remember), I do try to get the 5 fruits and vegie thing going but that doesn't always happen either. I've also found I feel better when I don't eat as much red meat so I incorporate some legume recipes into my diet.

I just have a hard time avoiding treats. I have gone 2 days without any and feel like it's a big accomplishment! :D I love spicy food and have always eaten it (especially if I feel like I'm getting a cold), but now my stomach doesn't tolerate it as much! (getting older sucks sometimes) :p

I try to walk for exercise at least 3 times a week but now it's so cold that I haven't even done that for a week. Man now I really feel guilty!!!

If I'm trying not to catch the bug that is going around I start taking Echinacea (like now).

Glucosamine 500mg bid for my bad knees

My whole unit takes PNV by the way (and we should, we're L&D sistas) and I swear we all have the nicest hair. ;)

Susy, I don't have the source, but I heard a radio program on the topic on NPR :) Nursing was mentioned several times in the broadcast, check it out.

the topic was: Chronobiology

This fall, a study looking at the link between night work and breast cancer concluded that shift workers are at a higher risk--possibly because late-night work disrupts the body's light-dark hormone cycles. In this hour, we'll talk about timing in medicine, and the connection between health, illness, and our body's rhythms.

Vitamin c makes the urine acidic,,,,,so it helps in preventing UTI's ....as the bacteria cant thriver in an acid envoirment...2 grams a day is ok ,,,we always gave 2 grams /day in the burn unit...to promote wound healing...

Hi you-all-so-healthy-nurses:cool:

I take one multivitaminpill in the morning (but only during the wintermonths, they start as soon as a R starts popping up in the months' name, LOL learned that from my granny!!), then I take 2x 30 drops of pure Echinacea and for my nerves or against my mild winterdepression, I take Johannis-herbs 300 mg a day

Twice a week I take Calcium and I eat salads (fresh ones right from the market) and fruit everyday.

(I got sick two weeks ago with a bad case of strep throat, but that was the first time in 5 years)

Take care, Renee

I have seen some combinations of supplements at the nutritional store where I'm working my way through school, work for customers over the years. There isn't much in the way of actual scientific research being done because results are always spread "word of mouth" just as we're doing here and as it's been done for thousands of years, literaly.

If something works, people come back and buy it again.

Although most of my data is purely anecdotal I have seen these supplements work from personal use and feedback from friends. Customers come back to me and give report from thier use ocassionaly, but I'm part time and it's difficult to get the report correctly if I didn't see the customer myself.

For estrogen replacement: Soy isoflavones, Black cohosh, Red clover. In that order of importance. There are several combinations on the market. My wife (who refuses to be my guine pig, flatly) had post menopausal symptoms that were relieved a few days after starting. She was so thrilled she considered heeding my advice to take a multivitamin.

A sensible combination for joints(which is one of the few supplements to be scientificaly backed) is a combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Glucosamine for rebuilding hyaline cartilage and Chondroitin to interfere with the enzyme that breaks it down. Many customers use it and so do I.

I take, and recommend taking a quality time-release multivitamin. I used to take a cheap theragram equivalent. I didn't think it mattered. I used some of our premium multis once, since I get a thirty percent employee discount, and my nails and hair(which I don't really give a crap about) started growing at a noticeable rate. I can draw a conclusion that I'm getting something out of the better vitamins that I didn't get out of the cheap ones and I think the cheap ones are a waste of money now!

I have found the Herbal Medicine Handbook published by Springhouse to be very useful as well.

If anyone has specific questions I'll be glad to answer them.

Brad
