I saw this thread started on another thread for people that are already nurses and I figured it'd be fun to just do it for student nurses as well.
What specialy do I want to work in? I really wanna do either Pediatric or Mother Baby/L&D.
What specialty would I never want to work in? I think LTC, it just isn't for me.
I have not started NS yet either, but this is my plan so far:
Wanted: NICU is my first choice (would love to be a NNP) PICU, L/D, OB or Surgery & ER possibly
NO: LTC, Geriactrics, Hospice, Rehab. In high school I worked in a LTC as a STNA and then went to the hospital and worked in Rehab. I am ready for a change!
I'm still pre-Nursing, so things could change between now and graduation. I keep joking that I'm going to specialize in geriatrics, 'cause I'm almost there myself (I'm >
Like: Any ICU/Critical Care. Top of the list would be transplant work (my ex-had a kidney transplant while we were still married). Peds (love kids) or clinical are tops as well.
Dislike: OB, L/D etc. would not be my top choice, for obvious reasons. ;-)

Then PLEASE PLEASE DO go into L&D! L&D needs more healthcare professionals/advocates like you!I gave birth to my son in a horrible hospital in a horrible po-dunk town (and had a horrible birth--not really the OBs fault; I wasn't induced or anything like that), and I was so happy to have ONE nurse/lactation consultant who was actually on the same page and pro-nursing, and came in and was supportive and congratulated me for not circumcising my son (the other nurses thought we were just waiting to have a Bris. . .NOPE).
But yeah, it would be really hard for me to really advocate for a woman's choices when I think they're harmful/ill-advised.
You were lucky to have one!!!! I really wanted to breast feed, but I received NO support from my nurses. Both of my sons were Coombs positive and very jaundiced. With the first, the nurses used scare tactics to push me to use formula, and with my youngest, they didn't want to take him from under the lights to allow me to feed him. Needless to say, I was VERY frustrated! And even though I ended up having to formula feed anyway (not enough milk ), it would have been nice to have felt like someone was on my side and not fighting against me every step of the way.
I would really like to work OB, L&D, or mother/baby for this reason. About the only thing that I would have an issue with is medically unnecessary planned c-sections. I've had two medically necessary c-sections and no way would I have done it if I had a choice.
I'm also really interested in ER, with the variety and fast-pace, but I'm trying to keep an open mind. I should start NS in the fall, and something else may grab my attention.

You sound great for mother/baby since those nurses do a lot more educating when it comes to breastfeeding and baby care/self care than the L&D nurses.
I thought about maybe pediatric ER as a possible choice but I'm not sure, the fast-pace of it makes me nervous.
I am hopefully starting a program this fall of 2010. I have worked as a tech in peds oncology and med/surg.
I really want to get into the ER first choice!
I want: ER, PACU, PICU, PEDS, Oncology (adult or peds), NICU
maybe: OR, any adult ICU,
I don't want: Med/surg, geri, psych, L/d, mother baby, or anything that deals with child birth.
