What did someone do that you knew to get fired or kicked out of school?

I've heard it said that most nurses who get fired are released for drug abuse. Do you find this to be the case in your experience?

when i did a SNF rotation, i had a nursing instructor tell me how "nice" i looked with makeup on. of course, the next week i was totally broken out and couldn't wear it because my face hurt so badly. we were told that we had to:

have our scrubs cleaned and pressed.

hair clean, fixed, and up off our collar.

clear nail polish

makeup (yes, in our handbook).

white shoes, expected to be cleaned weekly.

not that bad... but a little anal in my book. no, i didn't press my scrubs. and i didn't wear makeup, and i didn't use clear nailpolish. i used no nail polish but my nails were short, neat and clean. my shoes i did keep clean, and i always pulled back the hair and it was cut so that it sat up off my collar.

i was never kicked out or disciplined. I'm sorry but it is hard to get yourself all dolled up when you're getting ready to be wiping and transferring to BSC all day!

Clear nail polish? That's a serious no-no in school. If it chips off into someone's wound or anywhere else there could be a problem...

If a facility is going to suggest i wear makeup, i suggest they buy it for me.

Or start making the men wear it too.

Marie if that avatar is in fact you and not Klinger, the makeup won't help! :p

I'm not nit picking but if you were to touch a pt's wound, shouldn't you be wearing gloves anyways? :)

Someone in my class was kicked out for having made a comment about coming in and shooting our OB instructor. This was right after Columbine, so everyone was really nervous. At the time, I thought expelling him was exaggerated (this guy was the class clown and notorious for making stupid comments). Turns out, a year later the guy committed suicide. At least he didn't take anyone with him like that one guy in Arizona. Very sad.

There is a lawsuit pending now like this...filed by a female casino worker who's male boss suddenly after many years on the job 'required' her to wear makeup. Interesting to see how it comes out. Her point was the same: why do the guys with less than perfect complexions not have to wear makeup?

I'm amazed hospitals would do the same with nurses...but then again, their goal does seem to be portraying portraying professional nurses as hostesses and maids. :stone

mattsmom, the court ruled in favor of the casino on the grounds that it was not overly burdensome and she was free to seek employment elsewhere. I can look up the case citation if you'd like

I remember some 70's nursing school instructos DID seem to be trying to groom us to become doctors wives. Strange huh...is it still going on?

He11 no! At least not in my school.

This makeup talk is totally blowing my mind. None of my instructors even wear much makeup, any that do have a fairly "natural" look going... which I was taught was always the goal of makeup anyway... it shouldn't be so gobbed on that it LOOKs like you are wearing it...

Sometimes I wonder if there isn't more to the story with some of these makeup stories..... that is veryyyyyyy middle ages and I would absolutely freak if I heard anything along those lines (and I do wear light makeup but that's not the point).

Gotta run... the drs wives, makeup, etc talk is making me nauseaus (sp?)... :barf02:

I doubt many schools "groom" their nurses to be doctor's wives. With all the emphasis on professional behavior and critical thinking skills, as well as autonomy in practice, that just does not seem to fit our image OR curriculum these days. Thank Heaven for that.

Just wondering what you meant by "more to the story" about the makeup stories :)

We had a young man who went to HR about the discrimination of his manager who told him he could not wear makeup. HR told manager that since she allows the women to wear it, she must allow the men the same opportunity. He is so darn cute!

In my entire 17yrs, I've only seen nurses terminated for drug abuse, one for diverting Toradol.

Slightly OT, but I love this story. When my husband was attending a venerable, all-male boarding school, the decision was made to admit girls (quite a controversy in itself). The rule had always been that shorts were not to be worn on campus, no matter what the weather. The boys felt that the rule was unfair because the girls could wear skirts and be much more comfortable on hot days. SO - you guessed it - a bunch of senior boys put on skirts and paraded around campus all day. It makes me giggle just to think of it. I don't know the precise outcome but it definitely included the wearing of high-quality pressed shorts for boys.
