What did someone do that you knew to get fired or kicked out of school?

I've heard it said that most nurses who get fired are released for drug abuse. Do you find this to be the case in your experience?

And the makeup thing is just a lot to ask for, for some. Even with the hypoallergenic products out there, there are some people that are allergic to those.

I would feel sorry for any employer that has the beans to suggest i wear makeup.

I don't doubt that Marie! :D

:rotfl: :rotfl: Double trouble if he told you to wear makeup while standing in the 8-12 items line up with a 35 item order huh?

I'd pay money to see that! :chuckle

Well that's why i said that if a facility is going to suggest or require a woman to wear makeup, then they need to ask the same of the men. It's only fair.

There is a lawsuit pending now like this...filed by a female casino worker who's male boss suddenly after many years on the job 'required' her to wear makeup. Interesting to see how it comes out. Her point was the same: why do the guys with less than perfect complexions not have to wear makeup?

I'm amazed hospitals would do the same with nurses...but then again, their goal does seem to be portraying portraying professional nurses as hostesses and maids. :stone

she left behind the bloody coat hanger and a trail of blood to the elevator.

omg, i can't imagine how traumatic that must have been ... don't know if i'd ever get over seeing this, ruby. :o

The posts about the makeup were a hoot.

But I agree.....for MYself only, I look like a ghost without it.

Now, if my job wants to buy it for me I would have no objection.

I did have one co-worker fuss at me once, saying I should wear makeup everyday to work. I told her I do get up and put on makeup everyday.

She tried to argue with me and say I didn't.

But ya know, here in the south, in the dead heat of summer, when it get so humid, makeup can slide off of me like oil. I told her that was what was happening. By time I got to work it was mostly gone.

OMG fired or spoken to about makeup? That's hilarious.

I'm a student and cut down on my make up to look more natural and wear different clothing because I swear I am judged. I don't dress provacatively and I know there is a time and place for certain attire. I have heard similar stories of students that were treated differently while in nursing school.

Also, my school is pretty strict, so no kind of lazy or inappropriate behavior is dealt with. There are instances of favoritism with a couple teachers and down right profiling. But if you act professional, are prepared for clinical and show your dedication, there shouldn't be a problem.

On my floor at work I see lots of things I think are wrong or unethical. But I'm not a nurse yet. I know sometimes shortcuts are necessary. So I mind my own business unless the patient's safety is being compromised.

We had a professor in nursing school who would take it upon herself to critique our weight and the way we wore our hair, etc. I think she had it in her mind that we were all going into nursing only to marry doctors. I remember her telling one of my classmates that she was "getting wide". Charming!

when i did a SNF rotation, i had a nursing instructor tell me how "nice" i looked with makeup on. of course, the next week i was totally broken out and couldn't wear it because my face hurt so badly. we were told that we had to:

have our scrubs cleaned and pressed.

hair clean, fixed, and up off our collar.

clear nail polish

makeup (yes, in our handbook).

white shoes, expected to be cleaned weekly.

not that bad... but a little anal in my book. no, i didn't press my scrubs. and i didn't wear makeup, and i didn't use clear nailpolish. i used no nail polish but my nails were short, neat and clean. my shoes i did keep clean, and i always pulled back the hair and it was cut so that it sat up off my collar.

i was never kicked out or disciplined. I'm sorry but it is hard to get yourself all dolled up when you're getting ready to be wiping and transferring to BSC all day!

Quite frankly, here in the South, nurse managers may write you up for not wearing makeup or not wearing enough white, anything that they want as fewer hospitals are unionized.

Wow I would like a picture of the women who work at this hospital that people are asking them to please wear makeup geez..........I even worked for a top advertising agency and never was mandated to wear makeup.........was always neat wore some kicking suits but was never big on makeup..........did not fuss that much with that unless in the mood or if we where going out after work,,,,,,,,,,

So dang I must look hot and did not know it..........gosh all joking aside I can not fanthom some one having the audacity of telling someone to put on makeup ..........I have got to see the setting these people are working in .............anybody got pics of the manager at this site she must be something since she is asking people to put on all this makeup.......the nerve for real..................I can see if your sloppy ..if your uniform is all shabby if you look like some homeless person every day but damn ........some good moisterizer and some clear lip gloss is all women need to go thru there hard day of work.......hair done cloths clean ........smell nice ...........that is the basics...........

Good luck to your folks down south

Your pay is less ...........you got ridiculous request and I am sure you work hard.......... can not imagine being in that kinda circumstance of someone monitoring my person like that.........I would probably have it out with them could not tolerate that ..........my heart goes out to you

I just can't kick the vision I have in my head of these people being big hair types that wear enough perfume to gag their poor patients and wear war paint ala Tammy Faye Baker. I know that when I was cited for my "casual appearance" in my evals, it was by a supervisor who must spend an hour a day spiking her hair and painting her face, and probably spends a quarter of her income on her wardrobe. Swell for her, as her kids are grown and gone, but I've got a family and a house to attend to, so both time and money are at a premium around here. I am not going to lose an hour's sleep to I doll myself up and I am not going to run up my credit cards just so I can be dressed to the nines. Plus, for what I do, casual wear is much more appropriate anyway.

I cannot believe they write people up for not wearing make up. So, does this extend to MEN in nursing? I mean, how the heck can they seriously enforce this? How shallow and stupid is that? But then I am not "down South". I don't remember such idiocy in Oklahoma, however.

If they're writing people up for not wearing make-up, do they also have a written policy dictating how much must be worn? Does it have to be full face paint, or just foundation? Are there limits to how much is worn? Personally, I'd much rather see limits on the blue eye shadow and raccoon eyes look, but in reality, I can see nothing but trouble in implementing such a policy. Glad I don't work at such a facility!

Nor in Texas, altho I do now it was gently suggested to some nurses in general terms of 'you could do more to look a bit nicer, pressed, neat when you come to work'.

was told in several evaluations I should smile more. I was surprised (is this a modeling agency or a hospital) but I took it to heart. Niceness IS appreciated down south. Also was told check my attitude...outspoken-ness is not a virtue in Texas.

Worked with more than a few 'fru fru' nurses in Texas, big hair and all. These were the types who wanted attention and usually got it from the men, staff, docs and patients. There are probably a few out there everywhere...LOL!

I remember some 70's nursing school instructos DID seem to be trying to groom us to become doctors wives. Strange huh...is it still going on? :uhoh3:
