What Pre-Reqs Should I take at Community College before applying to a Nursing School

Published

Hello everyone, I am new here and have a question. I have been out of school for the last 13 years and I am attempting to go back and get a nursing degree. I was told the best route would be to attend a Community College and take some courses then apply to a nursing school. What classes do you recommend that I take at the community college? Please help! I know I have a really long road ahead of me and I am willing to follow it to my dream of becoming a nurse. Any suggestions will be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanx

Different nursing schools have different pre-req requirments, so the best bet would be go ahead and research which schools you'd be interested in attending, narrow that down to 2-3 and take the required pre-reqs for that school.

For example, one school I'm applying for requires:

A&P I & II

Microbiology

Another one requires:

A&P I & II

Microbiology

Nutrition

And another one:

A&P I & II

Microbiology

Nutrition

Statistics

Pathophysiology

Definitely research your school, and there will be differences between a BSN program and an ADN program. But all will require A&P I & II and Micro. Also you will need to check into the community college - my cc requires that you pass a department specifies skills test before you are allowed to sign up of A&P I, even if you've take the class before.

If i were you starting in the beginning I would start out as a freshman at a university/college that accepts students into the nursing program their freshman year. However, if you want to go the CC route first - my opinion is to get an associate of science/art because alot of schools waive the gen eds if you have an associates degree. But, be sure to take the essentials such as A&P1 and2, medical terminology(this will help lots!), chemistry.

Thank you for the replys they are very helpful. I am going to start to look into the nursing schools and see what pre-req's they require. This site is very helpful and I am glad I joined. Thanx :wink2::wink2:

the cc i am going to requires: AP1, AP2, micro, and english 1a. also, a chem class is a prereq into aP2 and micro.

Specializes in SNU/SNF/MedSurg, SPCU Ortho/Neuro/Spine.

you can go to your school nursing division and pick up a info pack!

Specializes in Corrections.

You are very likely going to have to take A&P I and A&P II. My school also requires college level math and english. Some schools do not require the math though. Maybe you can check the website of the school you are thinking about attending to find out some of the requirements.

My school has an orientation meeting once a month for interested people. They tell you what's required, (2 classes are required before you can even make the waiting list), the pre-req's best for Nursing School, etc. You might try calling the Community College Nursing School, they might have something similiar.

The very best to you.

I thought going back to school after 13 years would be silly, but everyone I talked to said its never to late to go back. This would be my second career. I am so excited. I cant wait!! It definetly will be a long hard road. We have to stay positive and encourage each and everyone to go for their goals to be a nurse. This message board is so positive and so motivating. We need more compatiant people in this world. Being a nurse will be so rewarding and I am looking so forward to helping and caring for people. Good luck to you!! And Congradulations on your acceptance!!! YAY!!!! :yeah:
