What patient phrase today made your day great?

i am a peri-operative nurse, today my first patient said "will you be with me for my entire surgery" i said yes as i was holding her hand before she drifted off to sleep she said " you are my angle nurse" today that one statement made the rest of my working hours great. no matter what else went crazy today i remembered "you are my angle nurse"

thats somthing you should remember your whole career maybe even your whole life.

I am always joking around with my patients. I like to keep the mood light whenever possible. Since I'm in LTC, we get to know each other pretty well and it's nice to make each other laugh. Everytime I joke around with a particular pt. she says 'Don't baloney me with swiss cheese' No matter how many times she says it, it always makes me crack up! :rotfl:

I'VE HAD TWO TODAY! I've taken care of these two older guys for the past 4 nights in a row... on day two one requested me for every shift that I worked saying "not only do I enjoy you taking care of me you're the best nurse I've had" (been with us three weeks :) )

The second was an 83 yr. old farmer, all I did was talk to him about his life and family history (about 45 min.). He gave me directions to his house tonight and asked me to stop by with my family, saying he wanted me to be a part of his family's life. This was the first time in 9 yrs. of nursing that I gave out my address and said write to me.

Mind you, adequate staffing this weekend allowed me time to teach, time to spend with them, it's an unfortunate rare comodity these days.

I have two. The first is from a patient that had ARDS and was on the vent for 3 weeks . She then came to the Rehab unit where I work, and has been there for 2 months. Trache is out , she is walking 75 feet, and told me "See, I told you I would walk out of here!!!!" That is what it is all about!!!!

The second one is from a patient who fell 2 stories onto concrete. He is lucky to be alive. He suffered severe multiple trauma. After getting well enough to do rehab, he has been on my rehab unit for 3 weeks. Today he said " Thank you for pushing me so hard. I thought at first that you were being a b...h, but now I know it was all because you care. You are God's angel!!!" Talk about teary eyed!!!

Recently, a pt gave me a card, in which she wrote:

"To my favorite nurse- You are the apple of God's eye. He loves you and so do I."

I will keep that card forever.

I am a Unit Clerk on the med/surg floor and there was a man that was in for a procedure.I saw him the night before his surgery as he was having problems changing the channel.Tthe CNA was busy as was the nurse so I love to help out anyway I can.I went and showed him how to change the channel. The next night at wrk I saw him and :crying2: OMG he looked like a different pt.He had surgery to remove a tumor in his head somewhere.It made me so sad to see him looking like another person he looked so bad.He woke up and ask for something. I wanted to go see him and he was fineat that time.He had a morphine pump, and they do forget they have one.I Went back to my desk and he called again sounding so bad.

Well,there are some nurses that hate to get off their butts to see what the pt's need.The pt's seem to be nothing but a bother to them.

I went because I felt something was up.He was holding his head and in such pain,he said"if I had a shotgun I would blow my head off" and a tear started rolling down his face,needless to say it did mine too.

I held his hand and called the nurse myself....The nurse came in and was being all nasty she was sighing until she saw me.Then she changed her tune and was acting nice for my sake.

She reminded him he had a pump.She left and I waited for the MS to kick in. He pulled me close to him and whispered"you must be an angel sent from above"he would not let go of my hand. He was squeezing my hand so hard I had told him,"go ahead and let me have some of your pain",anything to help him. He thanked me so much when it was really the morphine.

But, you can bet I made many trips down his way to "remind" :uhoh21: him to push his button...It really tore me up to hear him say he would blow his head off...Well, as long as he was there I went into see him.

So,needless to say it makes my job as well as the nurses and Cna's that are told by the pt's that they are valued for what they do !!

My most unfavorite part of my job is having to wake people up to turn, give meds, etc.

I went into the room of a sweet 80-something man on my sub-acute unit. When I gently nudged him awake, he jumped! and said he was dreaming. I asked him what he was dreaming about and he said "my beautiful nurse..... and there you are". ooooooohhh, did my heart melt.

About two months later I had the great opportunity of caring for him the day he died. He put his arm around me several times throughout the day. He actually passed away an hour after I had left. His family came back to the facility about a week later just to find me and thank me for the care I gave him. Wow, that's what makes my job great.
