I'm appalled to say i came from a school that allowed this, but i want to hear what you guys think.
So we had this girl that graduated last year, she came from a very very wealthy family. we shall call her "Jane Doe" I mean...very wealthy, beyond the point where you cringe. And she is super showy about it. Daddy bought her everything. her New mercedes for passing pediatrics, a class in which she struggled.
She is constantly dressed up in like Gucci stuff, only does her shopping in New York City, which they fly too every couple months so she can shop with daddy's credit card.
Ok, she reminds me of paris hilton. No joke! So to imagine this girl, think of Paris Hilton in Nursing school and you have this girl.
Ok, now you picture this girl. She is was in her psychiatric rotation at our local mental health facility. There was a girl that Jane Doe went to high school with that was in the psych unit for attempted suicide. Jane Doe and this other girl, the patient HATED each other in high school. I belive they've gotten in a few fights, constantly fighting blah blah blah (high school stuff). Anyway...so Jane Doe actually access her medical record and got all this information about her. Such has her hx of depression, suicide attempts, drug use etc. So Jane Doe gets home after her clinical day and tells her ROOMMATE, who isnt even in nursing, who she saw. She told her Roommate everything she read on the medical record.
So Jane Doe starts emailing anonymously this poor girl things like "If you were smart enough you would have jumped off that bridge" ....really really horrible stuff.
So anyway, make a long story short because there was more said and done, this patient complained to the hospital that someone had to have shared information because she is getting all these emails and its information only the hospital knows (medications, history etc.). So while the hospital is doing their investigation, she is still writing all these nasty emails to this poor girl. Her Roommate knew all about it (but not being in nursing knew nothing about HIPPA). So her roommate goes to one of our psychiatric nursing instructor and asked to speak with her privately. The roommate told her everything, just stating that she doesn't know if Jane Doe is doing something wrong or if there are any regulations against this but her roommate felt something was very very wrong about the situation.
So all actions that should have taken place, did take place. She was suspended from clinicals until it was reviewed, hospital was notified, the head hanchos got involved...everything. But now here is the catch----- her dad donated $100,000 to the school. and little miss prissy pants got off with NOTHING. No punishment, not kicked out of the school, nothing but a slap on the hand.
What do you guys think of this?? It disgusts me to even look at her. Needless to say, she got a job after daddy donated money to the hospital she got hired at (Sound fishy??)
Unfortunately, the patient doesn't sound like someone who has the emotional reseves to launch a battle like that. She sounds like she's just struggling to make it through the day and I imagine she has had many people treat her like crap to get to the point of depression, drug abuse, and suicide. Very sad. I would hope that she has family that could advocate for her but it's likely she doesn't. And all too typically what you see is that if the patient isn't making a huge stink, then the facility is going to try to sweep things under the rug. I imagine that they feel they have done enough in not allowing themselves to be used as a clinical site, and are trying to move on STAT.
I keep a whole list of plagues and pestilences in my head that I wish on people like that Jane Doe.
Sadly, it's all about the $$ and who you know. No wonder society is so screwed up. Yep, I am still in a bad mood about nursing. Let's hope it gets better.
I hate to have to be the one to say this, I'm sure we would all love to be a fly on the wall when she crashes and burns as she so desperately deserves but that is never going to happen. She won't quit nursing unless she gets bored of it and she won't be fired. We all know how money grubbing for profit hospitals can be, we hear about it on here all the time. She won't be a floor nurse for long before her daddy pulls some strings and flashes some cash and then she'll be a supervisor or in a cushy managing position where she doesn't have to get her hands dirty but can still peek in on some patients and feel like she is mother teresa in gucci heels and then the nurses can only clean up her messes and pray she doesn't get someone killed. Sucks so bad but so true.
I don't get why someone that comes from money would even be going to nursing school. There are much easier degrees where you can be relaxed and also get your MRS. degree.

I am inclined to believe there is a lot more to this story. You said you graduated back in Dec? But it's being posted as if this is currently happening? Would be hesitant to believe all this second hand information as well, you are saying this "friend" of hers hates her and that is why she tells you all this stuff. Well 1) I would be hesitant to believe everything someone says that hates someone. That hate could cause for a lot of embellishment. 2) in order for the friend to still have all this inside information she would obviously still be close to this girl all while secretly bad mouthing her and "hating" her. Which would mean she is a dishonest person.

unfortunately, money in this society can buy you everything!!!!
so the rich girl is going to have a nice long career as a nurse, whether in management or at the bedside.
the psych patient is not going to sue, and even if she does, daddy's waiting with a nice large settlement amount...
do yourself a favor op and just concentrate in being the best nurse you can be.
