We would call the police department and get them involved. Suddenly the "unreachable" parent becomes "reachable." It's like magic.

6pm???? Our admin would have reached out to the district SRO for our campus and/or police department after an hour or so of no contact from parent/guardian or someone from emergency list.

I honestly don't know what would happen after that. We had one instance where kids were left in our office till about 5pm, finally heard from mom who was calling from the jail - picked up for DUI earlier that afternoon. She sent boyfriend over to pick kids up.

Ugh thanbk goodness she did not show up! I have called the police before and the parents ended up in the same predicament, except worse with kids in the car.

If they're unable to attend our after-school program (due to unpaid dues), it becomes an abandonment issue and the police are called after a certain time frame. We release at 2:15, so I think by 4/4:30.

That's mind-blowing. Who had to stay with the child all that time?

The school secretary. The kids weren't sick.. mom just thought we were overreacting to her tardiness.

Is this a child that's normally picked up at dismissal? If so what on earth was the parent doing that she "lost track of time" and didn't realize she didn't have her child for over 3 hours?

In cases like this, we do the same as the rest of you - after about 45 minutes or so the PD is called and the child can be picked up at the police station. The police can handle it from there.

high school here. I don't know what the policy is but I know if I had a kid in my office at the end of the day then I would hand them over to the principal or counselor if parent weren't here yet. Unless of course they had something I thought the principal or counselor wouldn't be able to handle. Ie I wouldn't leave a student with asthma, diabetes, seizure etc. Then the principal and counselor can take it from there, communicating with the parent what the expectations are.

our dismissal is 3:05, I am expected to be here until 3:15. I have to pick my daughter up from daycare/prek from down the road by 3:30. granted her daycare/prek would be understanding if I needed to be late picking her up due to one of my students having a real emergency at the end of the day. I have been late before for example when a kid likely sustained a concussion in last period PE class, PE at end of day should be banned lol. but on a regular basis I will not stay after with a student. I would do the same if it were middle school or elementary, I would hand them over to the principal or counselor unless they had something medically going on that I didn't feel comfortable leaving them.

So since I work older kids, don't see this. But that is only because we do not bus from 7th grade and up and every single child is issued a subway/bus pass (I'm in an urban area). So school closes at 4 on Mondays and 5 rest of the week (unless special event going at school) and we chase all student out of the school building when it closes. Different admin each day closes the building and does this.

However, we also have another building with grades 5 and 6 and those grades do get bused and/or picked up. And we have had students on that end not picked up until 7 PM or later. So much so that for the common offenders, we have the student calling at starting at 3:30 PM to remind their parent/guardian of pick up time.

No police....yet.
