Can you suggests something I can use safely to clamp a foley catheter for patients undergoing bladder training??
I had a patient undergoing bladder training, he has a suprapubic catheter and was undergoing bladder training. I used a metal clamp forcep but then the catheter (w/c was made of silicone material)was torn in two. so we had to reinsert a new one immediately before the opening close!

I kink the clear plastic tube leading to the bag and hold it with a rubberband. I hope this helps.:wink2::wink2:

That's exactly what I do, especially since half the time, locating the actual clamp is quite impossible where I work. Works perfectly.
rubberband...Yes, I've tried that too but still some urine is still leaking through it so the clamping seems ineffective, that's why I used a metal clamp.

If it still leaks when you kink it and band it, try kinking the tube a couple of times. Not just folding in half. but folding in a Z and banding it that way. (does that make sence?)
some come with that white plastic clip thing to clip them to the bedding or gown. you can often fold the tube and stick it into the loop on the clip.
oh, also an Umbilical cord clamp will sometimes work. (if you work in a hospital setting and can get one!)
Thanks! I'll try doing that. Hope it works. I don't want a torn catheter again! i might get fired if that happens again.. :chuckle

You can also try rubber-shod Kelly clamps or hemostats, the same that you'd use to clamp a chest tube.

Yikes! don't even say that!!! we have one surgen that if he finds clamps even in the room of one of his chest tube patients, will bring them out and throw them at the nurses station! He doesn't even want to hear the *C* word when it comes to one of his chest tubes.

I do the Z thing as well. That's also how I clamp it for a bit if I need to get a urine sample.

If I need to clamp a foley, I'll use a hemostat with a folded gauze square between the hemostat and the tubing, so I don't damage the tubing.

Are foley clamps still around? They were little clamps specific for foleys.
