What job can I do on probation?

Published

I can't give controlled meds for a year. I'm barred from home health, travel nursing, and a few other things. My only experience is bedside 4 years in LTC and 3 years in psychiatric nursing. Never been a supervisor, and a lot of the desk jobs want administration experience. The only job I'm sure I can do is dialysis, and I'm striking out with those jobs despite being told that I "interviewed well." I don't know where to go. I live in CT, and am willing to move but do not want to.

I know of a lot of colleagues on probation were able to land a job in the drug/alcohol rehab setting. Also, LTACHs tend to be probation friendly. Good luck!

I found employment at a doctors office. I also heard that dialysis hires nurses with stipulations. Hang in there!

Our monitoring actually posts out general emails when someone contacts them looking for nurses, and I asked my case manager about “program friendly” employers for some direction. Also went through the dialysis centers local to me and nursing homes without any luck. I ended up finding a job through one of the employment opportunities posted by my program. The majority of the opportunities have been with plasma centers and blood collection or pop up vaccine clinics lately. I found a job that actually needed my years in oncology infusion and am doing what I love again. Felt hopeless for a good year trying to find work. I had to move 260 miles for the job I have now- two years in and I do not regret my choice.

Specializes in ED RN and Case Manager.

When I entered my state’s 5 year diversion program several years ago, I applied & was hired into a Case Management/your position. Initially, after thanking my lucky stars for getting a job, I had planned for it to be short-term until my narcotic stipulation was removed in 12 months. However, I loved the job & found it intellectually challenging without the fatigue of 12-13hrs running circles in the ED. 7 years later, I’m still in the same role just  expanded to a lead/charge type position.
I would’ve never switched from ED to this type of nursing position had I not been forced to leave ED. Although I wish I had made better choices 7 years ago, I’m grateful that the situation lead me to this job. I love it!

That’s fantastic! I wish more programs provided leads for potential employment opportunities.

I'm in the same situation, in CT. Email me if you ever want to vent or just ask questions. I don't really want to disclose info on this public space. or send a private message via all nurses.

May I ask how you got a job in case management without the experience? I am considering applying but I only have med/surg, outpatient surgery and GI experience. What do they usually look for?

Did you ever find a job?  I'm in the same situation right now with the same stipulations.  I also struck out with dialysis and now I'm a little scared of not finding a job.  I just feel very lost right now.

I’m in the Philly/PA area in the same situation.  Finding it hard to get hired.  It’s soul destroying but I’m still hopeful.  Anyone know of PNAP friendly employers?  I’d welcome a referral.

You can look for social service programs that have grants for a nurse....like a 'Boys and Girls club'. The money is not like hospital wages but working with the younger generation might give you a perspective on your local world. I did it in  graduate school and always think back on what a rewarding position I was in.
