I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!
Use 'em for clamping a foley for 10-15 minutes which allows enough urine to accumulate to grab a sample through the port. I also clamp one upside-down to the inside of my tunic (yeah, a tunic) threaded through a few rolls of tape. Then another hemo and my bandage sissors are right at hand, along with tape.
Thanks emtb2rn! Great ideas. I need tape and scissors handy in my summer job right now. I think I'll use that.
I've had my books spiral-bound and like this idea too. I can go through my books ALOT easier & yeah, they are lighter! I have no plans to sell them back either. Besides, if I decide to sell, I will find a student who wants them (instead of letting the bookstore make the $$ - NS cost enough $$!). I had my books spiral-bound at Office Max (or was it Office Depot? Anyways...) for about the same cost. And they did it while I was their. I waited maybe 5-10m.Question: did you just take out the chapter(s) that you know the Prof will be covering in class that day? If you do this, I can see how/why you do this! I need to think about doing this myself instead of spiral-binding.
Thanks!

Has anyone had a problem trying to get their books sprial-bound? A couple weeks ago, I took a school book to Office Depot, the girl at the counter told me I had to copy all the pages myself (79 cents a copy) and THEN she would spiral bind it for me?? She said it had something to do with copy right, yet when I went to the same store the evening before just to inquire about this process, the guy said it would not be a problem.

I've never had this done, but I think she misunderstood you.
You don't want it copied and the copied pages be spiral bound right? Sounds like that's what she's thinking.
If you do want the pages copied, then of course, it would be a copyright issue for them. (They didn't buy the book, therefore it's not a backup copy for them.) ....At least, that's how I understand copyrights.
The biggest thing I think you could have is the ability to throw away your social life and hit the books. Your classmates are your new friends/enemies :) It's like you enter a nursing matrix, and the real world doesn't exist. It's a world of commodes, syringes and body functions. And when they ask you to jump you say "how high?"
Gosh you make it sound so fun. :rotfl:
Seriously though I went to orientation the other day and the dean pretty much said the same thing. :chair:
