I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!
Thanks to everyone for all of the great suggestions and info! Now my only question...do any of you endorse a specific NCLEX-RN review book, or are they all pretty much the same??
P.S. I love the fact that you have to have a crapload of pens to make this work...because I already lug around an average of 20/class/day!!! :monkeydance:

WHAT ARE THE RINGS CALLED THAT YOU PUT ON THE PUNCHED INDEX CARDS???????
I have a couple that a friend in A&P 1 gave me (A YEAR AGO!). Now that I'm looking for more, I can't think of what they're called.
I want the bigger-sized ones...about 2 inches, and I want the clasp kind, not regular key rings.
Thanks!

The package I have says "Book Rings" they are by Office Works. Their # is 1 800 697 2448. I get mine at my Fry's grocery store but they also carry them at Office Max and Staples.....Good luck this fall!

I also just found some that has, "LOOSE LEAF RINGS". Geeze....I was trying all sorts of names, and coming up with a million wrong items. :chuckle

I really like the Saunders NCLEX review book. It gives tips on how to take critical thinking style tests and it's pretty comprehensive. I also like the Reviews and Rationales series Prentice Hall.....
Things I couldn't Live Without:
my littman cardiology stethoscope
Ackley & Ladwig Nursing Diagnosis Handbook
my VERY unstylish rolling bookbag
a good waterproof watch...mine was a Mickey Mouse Timex!
tape recorder....some instructors talk FAST!
my cheat-sheet clipboard with a built in calculator
Davis' Drug Guide and a Taber's
a good pair of bandage scissors
a lab values guide
A GOOD pair of shoes...I now wear Comfort Clogs...they're $10.99 a pair!
A STUDY GROUP ... we got together and HELPED each other. Everyone has
a different strength. Nursing school goes SO much easier if you help and
support each other!!
Good luck!!
Another option for this that I am considering: Microsoft One Note notetaking software. Load it on your computer and it syches up the notes you type with the audio in the room. So if you look at your notes and think "is that what he said?" "did I get that right?" It will play the audio that you were hearing when you typed it! You can play just the parts back you need to check, or listen to the whole lecture again.
hi! before when i have my duties, i often have with me my medical dictionary for reading, some nursing books too, oh my paraphernalias(pens, pencil and all that stuff)my BP and stethoscope and my sanitizers..these are the things i can go out with..and soft comfortable shoes would really help you during those busy days..
Not sure if this was mentioned before, so sorry if it was....
http://evolve.elsevier.com/productPages/s_0323036643.html an online care plan constructor (free!) that I hope will help when classes start.
THANK YOU to the poster about the book de-binding! you are the smartest person I have ever met!
I can't wait to get my first set of scrubs. It's probably not a big thing to most of you, but for me, it's like.....wow - I am really, really going to be a nurse. (Patting myself on the back)
Its a big deal to me, too!! I am soooo excited! I start school this fall and am ready to get the plain ole white uniforms we HAVE to wear! (pats YOU and ME on the back) Good luck!

I use the slim line one. I carry extra pens and care plan forms in it and that is just about what it will hold....just an fyi....don't put anything you wouldn't mind losing into the clipboard (ie car keys, expensive calculator etc) they get misplaced very easily lol!
