I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!

PDA! Simply because I think it is the wave of the future with the coming of electronic medical records.
Hi there!I'm just starting my accelerated BN in september and just got my list of things to buy. I'm surprised by how strict the uniform (i.e. shoe and sock) policy is but I understand this is to comply with the range of preferences clinical placements could have. Anywhoo, a watch. With my current digital watch I have to fumble with small buttons to get it to the stopwatch or seconds setting. It may seem like a little thing but, does anyone have any suggestions on what the best type of watch to get is?
Is a PDA really necessary? I want to do all that i can to make this 20 month accelerated degree go as smoothly as possible but I'm also very, very broke.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!
I bought a watch at target with a sweep second hand for 5 bucks...
there really are alot of great ideas in this thread...I just finished Block 1 and this is what was best for me:
for clinicals:
a decent stethoscope (I swear by my Littman)
a watch with a second hand
scissors
alcohol wipes
hand sanitizer
my comfortable Reebock walkers
pda with Tabers and Davis's Drug Guide
storage clipboard from Walmart
black pens
a good careplan book
for classes:
oh yes, the goofy rolling backpack lol!
the largest 3 ring binder i could find
lots of highlighters, pens, pencils
calculator
TONS of 4x6 blank index cards
hole punch to punch holes in the index cards
rings to hold the index cards together
printer ink (we had to dwnload and print powerpoints)
printer paper
a barnes and noble membership (save 10%, free shipping & no sales tax where I live)
very good time management skills
a comfortable and quite place to study
a strong desire to learn
for skills...practice, practice, practice
and last but not least, allnurses.com!
Ok 2 questions: Do they sell software for pdA's with the Taber's med guide and other drug guides? or are you buying the books and entering all the info in yourself???and will Barnes and Noble pretty much have all the nursing books you need?
you can download Tabers and the Drug Guide from skyscape.com. They let you download trial version of their software so you can try out different programs and see what is the best fit for you......
As for B&N, so far they have had everything I needed. I bought all the books for my first two semesters there. They will even sell special package deals (text and study guide etc.) I usually start at the publisher's site (elselvier or lww), search for pkg deals or two volume sets, get the isbn # then plug the # in at B&N. Last semester instead of buying the 1300 page med surge book that I needed, I bought the two volume set, it was a lot easier to carry around plus I won't have to worry as much about the bindings falling apart...........
