I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!
Hello Everyone, I'm new to Allnurses so be gentle!
Take this advice (if you want to) from a student who handles 17 credit hours and works full time (meaning I also have heard of this so-called sleep thing...). I am a sophomore in a 4yr program at University of Detroit - Mercy.
1a =ORGANIZATION
1b =3 ring binder, Break down
1c = PDA w/good med guide. Also if you go online you can get freeware that will help you calculate everything from ABG's to IV gtts's. (You will know all about this soon enough).
2 = Mosby's Nursing care plans book, it is precise and to the point and gives expected outcomes, worth the 40 buck without question.
3 = Realize early you will have minimal social life for the next few years and be OK with that. It kind of sucks but it will help your grades.
4 = I like New Balance all white Tennis Shoes. I also have a pair of K-Swiss I have had no problems at 8 hour/day clinicals.
Peace

You guys are allowed to carry PDA's around?? dont you have to sit down and input all the med stuff into as well? (I have no knowledge of PDA's so...)
I bought one mainly for school and I find just putting in the information (timely sometimes) just helps me remember, like a study tool. Also when you dont' Need/want to lug around all your books its AWESOME. Plus its always with you and very handy to have all that right with you.
Though you do need to get used to it and you can becuase quite speedy with researching info you need.
As a current nursing student what you need most is more time! If you can find a way to bottle some up to use when you need extra time, let me know the trick! I tried and it didn't work! Things you will definately need are lots of black pens and highlighters, 4 x 6 index cards for making your med cards (we had to hand write our own), a pen light, scissors, good stethoscope, some alcohol swabs to keep in your pocket, white uniforms (plain with elastic waist, button down shirt), a white lab coat(your school may not require one), white socks, undies, good shoes for long hours on your feet, hair bands to put your hair up, and clipboard comes in really handy. If you want to get ahead of spending lots of $$$ on books, you might want to consider purchasing some nursing careplan books, a good pathophsiology book, a good medical dictionary, a PDR, and a good lab diagnostics book. You will also want to buy lots of computer paper and some extra ink cartridges. These will come in handy when you start doing papers, and you will have LOTS of them to do! If I think of anything else, I will post again. Good Luck
I didn't see anyone mention a bible so you can pray for divine inspirational guidance when you get that clinical instructor from hell or as a little piece of mind when you're burning the midnite oil preparing for an exam
You are absolutely right. God helped many a plenty this past semester. Always remember Him.
hummm, I have 2 3 ring binders, one for hand-outs and one for class notes, both with dividers. A PDA with Davis' Drug guide and Taber's loaded on it. A good stethescope, individual choice but I use a "Pure-Tone" I swear I can hear a gnats wings with it. Scissors, black and red pens, a flip note book that fits in my pocket, as many No. 2 pencils as I can find (lol), highlighters (asst colors), black sharpie, 3-hole punch, stapler, and calculator. I have 2 pair of white Nike's that I swap out and a non-digital wrist-watch w/ second hand. I think that's pretty much all of it. Good grief it's a lot of stuff ain't it? LOL

Careful with allheart - they can be very inconsistent re delivery times...some people I know got stuff in a few days, others took WEEKS, or NEVER got their stuff at all. I use jascouniforms, some people like scrubfactory.
