7000 fatal med errors last year-where are theses nurses?
God love and care for you. I am so very sorry this happened to you!!! or any other nurse for that matter. Please see someone to help with your feelings and above all, don't give up your career! As so many others have already stated, our profession needs compassionate and caring nurses like you.

Does this bother you?
NO it would NOT work for an LPN. Many other vocations yes...say accounting, or computer tech...CNA would be about the only medically involved thing I can think of. We lost a mother of 5 in clinicals cause she tried to give insulin in muscle. Lost another because she gave a double dose of heart meds and 1/2 dose of B/P meds. Not because of the med errors, but because she was unconcerned...with an "o well" attitude. Good Grief, I can't imagine having kids being responsible for lives. Isn't that why they can't buy alcohol? They are not responsible enough to be able to trust with a can of beer, why on earth would we put them in charge of life maintaining drugs???

sexually harassment by Doctor, help!!
I don't know much about your society in Malasia, what is acceptable and what is not, but to me and I'm sure most american nurses this is beyond wrong. We have laws that cover this sort of thing and most hospitals would rather say something to the Dr. than have a harassment suit brought against them. I am at a loss as to what else to tell you. Maybe work your way up the chain to the Chief of Staff? I don't know but I wish you luck. Let us know how it goes. LadyStar

sexually harassment by Doctor, help!!
Tell him his behavior is unprofessional and you don't appreciate it. Or that his behavior is unacceptable to you and request that he stop. However you want to say it. If you don't say anything then he assumes that you are ok with his behavior and keeps it up. If, after you tell him, he keeps it up, then go to your supervisor. Always stay in the chain of command. He will probably stop when you bring it to his attention that it is not acceptable to you. Good luck

Old, made mistakes, looking for a miracle
Twallum, first thing you need to do is calm down and give yourself a break. Yes the NCLEX is hard, but it is doable. First you have to have a game plan. Since it's been so long since you graduated, you may need to review the basic stuff to get your brain in the right place. That always helps me. Don't beat yourself up for failing that test, there are younger, fresher, students who just got out of school yesterday that fail the NCLEX. The good news is, you can keep taking it as long as you have the almighty dollar. There are a couple of boards here devoted solely to the NCLEX. Good luck and keep us posted ok? LadyStar

Ok I need somehelp here with coworkers
I agree with Traumamom....CYA is the word of the day, so to speak, where this nurse is concerned. If you immediately record in the MAR that you gave the drug and what time, then I don't see how you could get in trouble. As for her mouthing off, just go directly to her. I have a kinda forceful personality, so I don't have much trouble going to the source of the problem. but it's never good to just sit back and put up with this sorta thing, if you do it only gets worse. If you are a doormat, sweety, people will walk on you.......

Help! New Grad in Mental Health
Hi everyone, I graduate Aug. 1st and I just got my dream job!! I start in mental health the week following graduation. Everybody keeps telling me that I need to work in Med-Surg for a year 1st, but I am just not interested in that. I really want to be a psyche nurse. The thought of spending a year in Med-Surg is really upsetting to me. Am I making an irrepairable mistake?? Am I the only person interested in psych? Is there anyone out there who could just be happy for me? Please let me know, I am getting really frustrated by all the hullaballou.

Describe your mental health rotation
Folks.....Is there something wrong with me??? I really enjoyed my MH rotation. I sat in on a role-playing session (which was awesome) and sat in on several group sessions. We were encouraged to contribute. There was no one, even in lock down that we couldn't interact with. I read all the charts I could get my hands on. We weren't assigned 1 patient, we wrote a care plan on our choice of all the patients in that unit. We rotated through all the different units, both opened and closed. At the risk of sounding like a "know it all"..... The thing in MH is that there are very few meds to give. It's Mental, not Medical. You can't give these folks a pill and fix their problem. It takes a lot of therapy and teaching to help these folks. I watched pro Mental Health teams work together and was in awe. These people know their stuff and how to use it. Future MH nurse LadyStar42

What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?
I tried Mosby's and didn't care for it to much, I personally like Davis' much better. I have a hard copy and a pc/pda copy of it. I think it's a "to each his own" sorta thing though. Hope you find one you like!

How many don't make it out?
Yes, I am very serious. It's not ridiculous either. I am not finding it impossibly hard. Tough and challenging, yes, but it something that I really want also. This course is not by any means impossible to pass, but at the same time you are not going to float through it either. It takes dedication and hard work. Of the students that are left, I can't think of one that is not focused and determined to pass:) I have faith that we are all going to make excellent nurses too. If nursing is what you want to do, you can do it. I personally love it and have wanted this all of my life. I will graduate Aug 1,'06. I can't wait!!! Good-luck and God Bless

How many don't make it out?
We started with 50 and are down to 11 original students (not counting those who transferred in) in our final semester. A handful decided nursing wasn't for them. One busted a drug test, 3 failed 2 clinical rotations and the rest failed classes. About 10 or so are in the classes behind me now. Ours is recognized as the toughest course around, but we are also known to put out the best nurses.

Should I Take a Medical Terminology Class?
I highly reccomend taking a terminology class. Instructors use words you otherwise will not know and they will not always expain. It will make life much easier on you. We are required to take it. Ours is a hearing-visual class that is very easy because of the way the system works. Also, once you take the class, even if you don't know the word, you can figure it out.
