What the Heck Moments!

Not sure how to title this appropriately for what I am asking for so I will try to explain, since we have threads for Pet Peeves, Worst Patient, Worst CoWorker etc. etc. I wanted to ask about one. One we have probably all been guilty of at one point or another but what are some of the most off the wall medical things you have heard of that made you give that :stone:stone look and say WTH???

I had a friend that was a heavy drinker, he was 19 and had a family that were all drinkers as well. We got to talking once and he mentioned that he knew his drinking bothered me. I told him that what worries me the worst is how young he is and how much harm that he is doing to his body. He didn't ever drink and drive, manly stayed at home and would go through an 18 pack of been in one night. I was telling him once his liver starts going down hill he isn't going to be able to reverse that. (this was before I ever even thought of being a nurse, I was just a concerned friend and had another friend that lost her mother to liver failure from drinking and her mom was like 35 when she died)

So my friend kind of smiled and says "Well don't worry, I guess it's a good thing I have 2 livers, if one fails I have a back up"

:stone :stone

He was not kidding.

ANd then there was the lady in the nursing home that totally freaked when she went to the bathroom and insisted that we "Call the Doctor! Call the Doctor!" because when she wiped, her hemorrhoids showed a tinge of blood, and she thought she was going to lose a lot of blood and bleed to death.......

I like the ones who want "meds only codes" but no CPR. How are you going to circulate the medication?

We get orders like that every once in a while... we all joke that if you push the drugs into a peripheral IV, then I guess you need to rub their arm and push the blood towards their heart :chuckle

We had a patient one time that came in for something totally unrelated to a major problem he was having. He was the type of patient that wasn't quite "all there" if you know what I mean and his friend looked like he could be a serial killer....

Anyways, when we asked him why he came into the hospital he told us "because my ****** (testicles) were swollen and when I got out of the shower my buddy saw them and said '**** man would you look at those things they are going to explode'"

How I kept a straight face, I will never know!! He ended up being in A. fib with RVR and never complained about his heart or chest once!

We had a 20 something girl that came thru the ER a few times with the same problem. Not everytime, but occassionally when she menstruated, she would have a spontaneous pneumothorax. After about 6mo of testing, they diagnosed her with some rare disease that causes this. Its been so long ago I dont remember what it was called - just that it was rare. Her family says she's moved out of town.

Back when I worked @ the community health center, we had a lady in her late 60s that would come in every so often for pregnancy tests....this was about 2003 or so. She swore she thought she was pregnant. "I feel something moving in there every now and then." We tried to explain about gas bubbles etc. but to no avail. We knew she didn't have a lot of money so we were trying to save her a few bucks for something we just dang well knew she didn't need. No dice. She insisted on a pregnancy test every couple months for about 9 months.

The best part of this was that she'd had her tubes tied many years ago, and hadn't had a period since 1975. Ah well. She was a sweet lady.

my biggest WTH moment came from my DON a few months ago. I had ordered a CXR on a pt after we sank an NGT. she told me never to do that again because it was a waste of money from the budget because NG tubes don't show up on an xray.

what do you say to something like that from you boss?? lol

I have a DNR that says you can intubate, but no compressions. My logic is that I can have trouble breathing and need intubation long before my heart stops. If my heart stops though you can just let me go. I know it doesn't make sense unless you think about all the scenarios that occur before the heart actually quits.

Some people (and some hospitals) equate DNR with do not treat. It would make sense to ask for drugs but no compressions in that case. So you give full and aggressive treatment until the heart actually stops.

I had a patient ask me where his 'other' pancreas was.

Have also been asked repeatedly by patients and family members about medical procedures...particularly a 'brain transplant'.

Beam me up Scotty!

I had a pt who swore that "all her veins" we removed from her legs.

And someone else who stopped taking her Halcion because "it made her sleepy" - she was taking it in the morning with the rest of her pills! Then she asked if the doctor would prescribe her a sleeping pill to take at home when she was discharged. I had to leave the room and gather myself before going back and telling her the Halcion was a sleeping pill.

We have a pt who can be inbubated but no chest compressions! We are still debating what to do if she is found with no pulse/resps.

I HATE the one where you can give drugs but not do CPR, let's talk about circ of meds...
