What happens if you dont get in?????

Published

hi everybody,

I always try to think positive thoughts, However, i also like to think about alternatives. Its inevitable for me to think what would happen if I dont get admitted into a nursing program. So thats my question, What happens after investing all your time and energy into your pre-requisites and although you have good grades they are not good enough to get admitted into a nursing program? I've heard people say that they've been denied with 3.0's and up.. so What happens? are you forced to change your carrer path? can you apply those classes to another profession? What are the alternatives or choices for those who dont get admitted into nursing school? What are your plans if you dont get admitted?

thanks a lot!

Try another program or find out why you didn't get accepted and if it something like GPA you can retake a few classes (assuming you had a good GPA to begin with). Other than that, look at the other helath occupations programs that are interesting that you may already have the prereqs done like dental Hygiene, Respiratory therapy, Radiology tech, Paramedic. Or if you were going for RN look into LPN programs.

If I don't get in I will start working on the prereqs for the BSN and try to get them done within a year and will also re-apply to the ADN program again next March.

That's exactly what I intend on doing. If we do that, we will be able to go straight from RN to BSN. I could always change my mind I guess and decide enough is enough, but right now, I really want to get my BSN.

I spent four years trying to get in. I finally made it this year.

I kept retaking classes until I got A's. I retook the HESI and kept improving my score. I just did whatever I had to to get in. I had also planned to go for an LVN degree then the RN bridge, and I did get accepted into the LVN program. Fortunately I was accepted into RN school this year and didn't have to do that. At least I had a back-up plan.

Plenty of people told me I should quite; that the fact that I wasn't getting into nursing school was evidence that I wasn't cut out for it. There were times in those 4 years that I thought to myself "If only I had chosen a different path I'd have another degree by now."

Time will tell whether or not I made the right decision. For me it feels right and I think trying and trying again made me a better person.

Good luck!

Welcome and congrats on your acceptance into RN school. Your story gives me hope ;)

I just applied, so I am willing to wait, while waiting, I will be taking as many pre-req's as I can. I also applied for a two other health programs, my ultimate goal is to provide good health care to people in need, so I would be comfortable working in various capacities.

I am spazzing out moreso about school, will I pass. I will have to quit my job of 6 years and use my 401k and cash out equity in my home. I do not want to let my family down, so I am worried.

Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone.

Yes, you will have to make great sacrifices to do this. I'm fortunate that I'm in a relationship where my SO is willing to support me while I'm in school. There's no way I could do this on my own. Hopefully we will be rewarded with a decent income and job security at the end of it all.

Now I just have to make sure I don't wash out.

Natkat: Thank you for sharing your story! You gave me a little bit of hope.

I am in that situation now. I am going on my second year of rejection letters. If I don't get in soon, my sciences will expire. So I'm just trying and will continue to try to get in each entrance period.

People are continuing to ask, you haven't gotten in yet? They all see me studying....some days it is just so overwhelming...and some days I just feel so hopeless

Yea, but what do you do if there's nothing else to get done while you wait?? I have all my pre-reqs done for BSNs as well so there's nothing left to do.

My school aslo has a physical therapy masters and a RN generic masters (yes this is new) so I'd have to go ahead and major in something else like biology and graduate with bachelors first. Which would suck because my heart would not be in it, it would be so hard to drag myself to class everyday (and leave my kids mind you) in order to just get this "back up" degree so I can go forward from there......

I hate this process! #@!%&*#!

I had a 3.77 on pre-reqs and all of my non-nursing courses completed with a 3.82 when I applied for Spring '06. There were 15 students with 4.0's that didn't get accepted for that semester.

I retook my Algebra class, and took a Music Appreciation class. For Fall '06, I applied with a 4.0/4.0. (3.77's were admitted this semester though...lol...You never know what the cut-off GPA will be.)

Isn't that crazy??? I guess that is the way the cookie crumbles. I just found out a girl beat me for the Fall with a 3.2 GPA (overall) and LOUSY test scores! However, she had more of her co-reqs done so she was admitted.

Now lets discuss the Spring of 07 applicants (those who were declined with me). From what I gather talking to others, I will need to complete all of my co-reqs with a 4.0 and have them all done by the end of the Summer in order to be competitive. Whereas those who received Fall 06 admissions got in because he/she finished most of his/her co-reqs and the rest of us did not. Most of us were not even close.

So to sum, I have to be a HECK of a lot more competitive for Spring 07 admissions then those admitted this Fall. A few things in my favor is the fact that I already have great test scores and a good GPA. This is in contrast to what I am hearing about many others who have poor test scores. Those with poor test scores are not allowed to retake the NET during this application cycle. So I have a chance!!!

Crazy alright. lol ....It's all how you look at it though. Last semester I had all of my co-reqs completed (17 credits) with a GPA of 3.82. Our school mainly goes by pre-req GPA though, and only the co-reqs are used for a tie-breaker.

Therefore, the lowest GPA was 4.0 on the pre-reqs with only 6 credits of co-reqs completed with a GPA on those credits of 2.5.

So, looking at it that way, I had 2 B's in 30 credits, while the lowest cut-off GPA had 1 B in only 19 credits.

Which way is unfair? Who knows....

All I know is that it seemed unfair, but I understood that's how it goes. Now, I don't care about last semester....I'm in for Fall.

I know THIS is the semester I'm supposed to start! It just feels right! :balloons:

I wish you the best.

Thanks. And if I have not made it clear in other posts, I am very happy for you! ;)

As for me, I feel positive about this Fall too since I will have more time to work and spend with hubby and kids while I wait for the Spring letters to go out. In fact, this Fall Semester will be the Summer I am going to miss out on except longer! :lol2:

Good luck to you too! I can imagine how exciting a time it must be for you!
