What Gets to You??

I CANNOT suction. There is something about the noise that makes me start gagging.. I will take pee, poop, puke up to my waist and any kind of trauma absolutely fascinates me. But when the suction starts, I have to start looking for something to barf in.

Hi, I am new here!!! What I want to know is what gets to you? I think we all have something that just really makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up when you have to take care of it.

The worst thing in my list is gangrene. If I never have to smell it again, I will consider myself truly blessed!

*shudder* suctioning for me as well. It makes me gag. I can handle anything else, but the sight/sound/thought of suctioning a gunky trach or airway makes me ill!

i work in trauma too, and I can deal with snot, poop,vomit, just about every thing except gray matter. I nearly passed out the first time I saw it. And the other thing is gi rectal bleeding. I have lost my cookies with it.

Degloving injury: when all or part of a body area (esp. extremities) has the skin removed (often with damage to underlying structures) as a result of blunt force or trauma (accidents, etc.) Usually requires LOTS of debridement and reconstructive surgery.

hi i got your message! yes, this is correct! i work in a dr's office and before i went to work their she was asked to help do something or actually just be their for the procedure due to lack of help and everyone that works their also has said she has been like that every since! she no's it all and no's nothing!!! i have spoke with her about this a couple weeks ago,it really did not do any good and i have witnessed her do things and i have gently told her YOU CAN NOT DO THAT! also i have told her i can do my job i no what is going on,i cant do your job so please give me some room here, she takes anything said to her as if someone is trying to step in her toes,i live in north carolina and i no the rules are different everywhere but i am worried she is going to do something stupid or mess up and cause the dr's alot of troulbe. also i was under the empression that if you were not trained or cert. or whatever then you have no buisness dealing with patients i also said to her "what is the purpose of me being here if you are trying to do everything"? she has ran alot of nurses off in the past for this but this is one girl she will not run off! any advice will help

I am a new member as of yesterday. I am a student nurse in my second quarter so I haven't experienced as much as you have. But yesterday I cleaned up a patient with MIRSA. She had a full brief so I began to clean her up. As soon as I wiped the orifice, butterscotch colored feces began to ooze out. I held my breath. I thought she was done, but more oozed out.
I too have an iron stomach, but it was pungent! Not the normal feces smell. I almost did loose it and I really thought I could take just about anything. I did come home an hour later looking for dinner though.
I do have a vomit phobia stemming from my childhood. I thought that would be my weakness.

I can deal with most everything but the one thing that really messes with me are eye injuries. Its not that I get sick its that my eyes are "sympathetic" and start watering. Another thing that "gets me" is when I pull up to a car accident and its someone I know. I am able to make it through an assessment and even provide treatment but as soon as I am sure they are stable, my knees give out and I just stop functioning for a few minutes. This has happened a couple of times. Luckily so far I have never seen a truely bad car accident where there hasn't already been Fire and EMS on scene, then again I used to say that I had never seen a full code, well I worked one for quite a while one Sunday afternoon at the nursing home while waiting for an ambulance to get there. So I keep a big first aid kit, spare warm blanket and a fire extinguisher in the back seat at all times.

I can't stand teeth things! I too work in a large level one trauma center and you can show me the grossest stuff and I will just calmly carry on. But...ick - teeth!

and metal chips, etc in eyeballs that need to be removed.

Your not dumb at all. I just found out what they were myself a few weeks ago. lpnadm got it right. It's where all the skin is removed from the extremity and all that is left is the muscle and yucky stuff. I saw one last week where a woman was driving with her arm out the window, got side swiped and all the skin was taken off her arm from her shoulder down to her fingers, just like taking off a glove. It was just one of the grossest things I have ever seen. Yuck!
