Hi, I am new here!!! What I want to know is what gets to you? I think we all have something that just really makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up when you have to take care of it.
I can't stand FINGER INJURIES!!!!!!!!! It just makes me cringe to see them.
I would rather take care of an amputated limb than a mangled finger.
>>I still say FEET!!!.
My cousin is like this...she's been a nurse for 15 years, but can't cut her own kids' toenails....even nice, clean baby ones. SO WEIRD.
Apparently in her practicals, her CI was blown away. She saw my cousin wash a patient totally covered in feces without batting an eyelash, but actually gagging trying to cut nice, normal toenails of a bed-ridden patient.
Myself, pictures of ANYTHING (surgical wounds, ulcers, etc...) horrify me, but when I see it in person, my concern for the real patient overrides my disgust and I'm fine. But I take a lot of ribbing from my classmates.
I still say FEET!!!. Stinky, sweaty, socks so toasted they are stuck to the skin..toenails that have been growing so long they curve under the toe...eight hundred layers of dirt...and when you take the sock off and a gangrenous toe comes with it...I'm done.
I also work prehospital, and I work with an EMT who we have to make sure isn't at the bottom of the stretcher, because sometimes the feet roll out and rest against his arms. He will turn pale, break into a sweat and about pass out.
Rectal bleeding! I can have a pt vomiting copious amounts of blood, but as soon as it starts coming out the other end I'm gagging and have to leave the room. You know the patients....you look in the bedpan(hopefully the pt has made it on a bedpan) and see what appears to be globbs of raspberry jelly but it doesn't quite smell like it!
The one thing I've seen that really grosses me out is trach patients. When they cough their mucousy coughs, I jump back almost every time. I hate it when I'm doing trach care and the cannula is out and they start coughing mucous out. Totally grosses me out. But, were I to see degloving to the extent mentioned earlier (from the shoulder down to the fingers), that may get me too.
