What Freaks You Out?

Okay, people. It's time for a nice, fun, light-hearted discussion to blow off some steam.

WHAT FREAKS YOU OUT? What bodily fluid can't you STAND? What wound gives you the absolute WILLIES? It doesn't matter if you're an ADN, BSN, LPN, CNA, PQRST, ABCDEFG...every body gets the heebie jeebies over SOMETHING...even you stomach-of-steel ER nurses!

Mine is eyeball injuries/surgery...aaaaaaaaackkkkkkk!! Gross! Makes my skin absolutely CRAWL. Or when someone gets a little cut on their finger/toe/whatever and then squeezes it to make it bleed!! Bleah!! Then there's the ever-popular RESPIRATORY SECRETIONS. I can handle poop, pee, amniotic fluid, lanced boils, pus, whatever...but give me a nasty snot-filled trach, and I'm OUTTA THERE.

Share, share, share people! biggrin.gif

One word: SMEGMA.

I have a feeling the winner will be mucus. Gagging just thinking about it. I've seen 20 year veterans turn their heads while suctioning a trach! The noise alone! Slurrpp!

Wow, I couldn't have said it better myself!!! Working in OB as a CNA, I had a patient pass a clot as big as a cantelope. Not much grosses me out, but that one got me.

the worst for me are spiders that find their way into the ltc that i work in. there haven't been many & that's why i'm still there!!!

Taking off socks is always a risky undertaking with street people, but my worst experience was taking off a homeless diabetic's socks and having his toes come off with the socks. ahhhgggg

Last night in ICU there was a HUGE coakroach. It was dead, but still. I don't like the idea that there was a coakroach in our ICU.

Trach suctioning, strange for a CC nurse! I also don't do eye surgery well.

surgical procedures! when i was an office nurse i had to assist the family doc's with sutures, i&d's, skin lesion removals, cryo for plantar's warts.... but the thing that got to me the most was the toenail removals, watching them inject the toes with lidocaine and cut right straight down the middle with a scapel, then peel off the halves of the nail in strips. the local never quite deadened the toes all the way. hence the patient would be coming off the table and breaking my hand while i gave support. seeing anyone in that much pain makes me want to pass out. give me my clean post op incisions anyday!!!!

I also have a problem with mouth care. Especially if there is a lot of decay. I cannot understand what makes people want to be dentists. Yuck!

The only thing that really grosses me out is GI bleeds I can't stand the smell. The other thing is the smell of a near terminal CA pt.

I have to things that really gross me out is neuro breath (doing mouth care with patients with neuro breath) and artificial eyes I had a patient when I first statred nursing who's eye would fall out and she always came to me to put it back in

YUCK!!!!

Gonna have to add "memberes that look like split hot dog buns" to the list now!

What is neuro breath?

neuro breath is a nasty smelling stench that comes from a patients mouth and nose after they have suffered a major head injury, Its usually seen when the patient has been sedated and has an ET tube
