What Freaks You Out?

Okay, people. It's time for a nice, fun, light-hearted discussion to blow off some steam.

WHAT FREAKS YOU OUT? What bodily fluid can't you STAND? What wound gives you the absolute WILLIES? It doesn't matter if you're an ADN, BSN, LPN, CNA, PQRST, ABCDEFG...every body gets the heebie jeebies over SOMETHING...even you stomach-of-steel ER nurses!

Mine is eyeball injuries/surgery...aaaaaaaaackkkkkkk!! Gross! Makes my skin absolutely CRAWL. Or when someone gets a little cut on their finger/toe/whatever and then squeezes it to make it bleed!! Bleah!! Then there's the ever-popular RESPIRATORY SECRETIONS. I can handle poop, pee, amniotic fluid, lanced boils, pus, whatever...but give me a nasty snot-filled trach, and I'm OUTTA THERE.

Share, share, share people! biggrin.gif

When there is lack of intestinal movement, or complete blockage...

it's gotta come out somewhere

I can stomach pretty much anything, but one thing really grosses me out. I gave blood the other day, and I nearly vomit every time I do. It's when they've done the venepuncture, and they drape the tubing over your arm while they put the collection bag on the rocker, and you can feel the warm blood flowing out of your arm through the tubing into the bag. Yeeucch!!!! Give me a good colostomy bag anyday!

On my first clinical ever as a freshman, I was giving a bedbath to a 99 year old woman. When we turned her, I saw that her whole uterus was on the bed. I mean the entire thing was OUT, connected only by whatever uteri are connected by. The uterus was all excoriated too and gigantic. She died the next day. I don't like things that prolapse....they gross me out. Also, any kind of rectal/lady partsl discharge .Haldol mouth is gross too. I once thought a lady was soiled until I realized it was her breath. And she wouldn't let me clean her mouth. But one of the nastiest was a guy on a trach with pseudomonas. His trach collar hadn't been changed in forever and it was cutting into the back of his neck and green pseudomonas pus was coming out of his neck where the trach collar had sliced into it. It was the single most disgusting thing I had ever seen.

Okay, I have a pretty tough stomach, but the worst thing I've ever smelled came from a empyema. It took Trauma/surg. over 45 minutes of digging in the side of this guys chest with a scalple to get the chest tube in. They said the 'infectious sac' was so hardened it was like cutting through tree bark. When they finally hit the thing, blood and pus FLEW out of it onto the floor. I thought I was going to die right then and there. We knew it was bad because he had "white out" on the whole right side of his Xray, but I never imagined it would be that bad. We drained 2 liters of pus off this guys chest in a matter of 30 minutes. Off course, he proceded to get shocky, but turned out okay. There's nothing worse than that smell of infection bursting loose!!! I went home and took a shower and could smell it all over again when the water hit my hair!!!! YUCK!!!!!

Fecal emesis right at the top. Oddly - it coming out the CORRECT end doesn't bother me in the least.

I saw a green pus-filled abcessed sac explode when someone was having their massively fungal toenails trimmed. That was as close as I've ever come to tossing my cookies on the job.

When you remove someone's socks and their dried black crunchy toes falls off.

Pt was A/O, admitted for Pneumonia - I was a new grad - and was doing the admission assessment - I asked the patient - he said that his MD (old country boy) told him that they would eventually fall off - he wasn't the least bit upset about it.

Even scarier, the admitting MD didn't know a thing about it.

i absolutely hate inserting ng's...especially on that patient that is gagging and coughing (i hate respiratory secretions!). then you get the damn thing in and they pull it out.....here we go again. now i have never had one, so i don't know how "comfortable" they are....and i know that it has to be more uncomfortable for them than me....but i would much rather have it inserted once instead of twice!!!

We found ants on the counter, IV tubing, and bed of a critical micropreemie in the NICU. There was a little bit of TPN fluid dripped on the floor.

Ther eeww part is that there were a few ants on the BABY! Just made me cringe.

They is very small compared to something that we are talking about, but I gag when I have a pt who chews their pills. Especially tylenol. That has to taste soooooooooooo nasty.

Rotten crotch smell is the worst!!
