  1. I loved working for a smaller hospital, I got so much expierance, I learned alot for alot of different areas since I was the float.
  2. I went through almost the same situation, only they would punish me by taking away hours if for some reason I refused to kill myself for them, Guess what I did, I QUIT anyway, I had to totally resign from the hospital even though I wanted to stay on prn in one dept, I finally relized that it just wasnt worth all the hassel and went to agency, Last night was my last night to work at my old job, I sang and did a little dance on my out, the look on my mangers face was priceless
  3. No sorry, my ex-husband was filipino, he spoke taglow(sp)
  4. I get to win all the way around, my family is affectionaly called the rainbow bunch, daughter is filipino, son is black, mom was Indian, dad is irish, sometimes we get stares where we go, most of the time we dont, we live in mostly an all white community( sorry yall it is to early in the morning for me to try to spell all the politicaly correct terms) As for at work I do not see in differance between the races, we all mingle down in the trenches so to speak, sometimes the pts get a little cruel but we just slug it off, I had one pt who asked ,e what are you any way your not all white, but you dont look hispanic either ,(she was white) I just laughed at her and told her I was of exotic stock, most of our docs in this area are from India, or hispanic, they are the most popular docs, now as for racisim in hte community, I may have to relocate when the kids get older, I have had numerous people not of white skin tell me I was raising the kids to be too white, the white folks ask me how I plan on raising them, my answer is simply they will be strong christian adults with the values I pass on to them, I do try to educate the kids on their histories, I have several filipino friends that are teaching lori, and several black friends that are around chris. at work we are all treated like crap no matter the color of our skin, we are treated equally sh@#%y Great thread Vegas,
  5. I just enjoy the heck out of starting their I.V.s dang I missed it gotta try again, man you have really rolling veins, or inserting their foleys, not enough KY what are you talking about I smothered the thing in KY NOT!!!, seriosly though I try to be myself, I am confident that I go above and beyond the call of duty every day, If they have a prob. with me I just laugh, cont. being my usually sweet self and let them wallow in their own self pity,
  6. I attend funerals for those pts that I can, I wear my whites, the family allows appr. it. it also helps me deal with their deaths
  7. The only thing that really grosses me out is GI bleeds I can't stand the smell. The other thing is the smell of a near terminal CA pt.
  8. Hello everyone, I could not help myself I work as the night shift Float nurse in a small rural hospital. My first statement is I never float I run!!!!!LOL On a serious note though I was hired to do Resp. care since RT are in short supply around here anyway, take last night for instance I come to wk at 7p as usual get report on the pts I am required to take on med-surg, b-4 report is over the ED is paging me to draw bld gases, OB wants me to cover while they are in a delivery, and ICU needs an ECG. this continued all night long. Just as it does every day. Now take into consideration that it was either sink or swim I never recieved any orientation to any of these units besides hands on I begged pleaded demanded training and all I got was your a fast learner and you will be okay. I cant even begin to describe the fear I felt when I first began this job. Lucky for me I wk with a very tight knit group who took me under there wings and taught me the things I needed to know also we are a small facility of only 94 beds, I agree that there needs to be more training and orientation I just found out that adm. hired a new grad to become my relief. At least when I started I did have some expierance with critical care. I don't know what the solution is to the "float" prob. is However to quote one MD I wk with, "I know you have to learn lets just hope that the pts understand why, due to cutbacks and all, that they are going to get an med-surg nurse to assist in their surgery" No pun intended to the Med surg nurses out there, I know how hard yall wk.
