What field of nursing do you want to go in and why?

I think I want to go into ER. This is because there is lots of teamwork (well, I guess that's based on the workers), it's also standard protocols rather than scheduled orders on the floor, and the MD is always present when needed...though it's a challenge, I'm up for it. What about you guys?

not the issue nor my point, but good luck in whatever you do.

I worked in an ER for 1.5 years as a Unit Secretary and I LOVED it. I've worked on PCCU as a PCA and I loved the patient care but couldn't care less about the floor. I work in the NICU now as a US/PCA and HATE it.......and now I'm doing my clinicals on a Med/Surg and once again, not my cup of tea. I think I love the fact that the ER is in and out, for sure my first choice. I eventually want to do Rapid Reponse and/or Critical Care. Then Wound Care and teaching when I slow down. But you know, life never usually goes as planned so I'll be happy just to land a job when I'm done school.

I know that my passion is ER. I was a paramedic many years ago, and know I probably won't be able to get into an ER right off the bat (though I understand the local county hospital has a new grad ER program, and that's actually the hospital I want to work at so I'm going to try) but that's my passion. Med-Surg wouldn't be so bad if the patient ratios weren't so freakin' high. I know that it's possible to take care of 6+ patients a shift, and the hospitals I've done rotations at actually tend to have 4-5 so it's apparently not as bad in this area as some of the horror stories I've read here on AN - but I just don't believe you can give the level of care the patients really need with that kind of ratio.

The ER is the pace I like... nonstop, patients in and out. My personality is better suited to that, and I know I can handle the pressure. My eventual goal is to be a NP in an underserved area (preferably rural) and the local county ER IMHO is the best place to see everything that you can possibly see. :) I'm planning to get there as fast as I can.

Flight nursing is my dream! I love ER, ICU, and CCU because it's fast-paced, independent, and I get to spend time with my patients (at least at the hospital where I'll be working). I know it's different in other areas of the country than where I live, but the hospitals here have many new grad positions listed in specialty departments. I believe it's because higher acuity areas have a higher rate of burnout, so nurses tend to start out in a specialty area but then go to med/surg or a similar area.

I'll be graduating in May and have accepted a float pool position at the only Level One trauma center in our region. I was shocked to be offered the position because my cousin is a nurse out west and she told me that new grads NEVER get float positions. However, I think the hospital is treating the position as more of an internship than an actual float position, because the way they describe it I will be orienting in all the units and then placed in a home unit. I'm hoping for Neuro Trauma ICU.

I think hiring tendencies really differ depending on which area of the country you live in. I've been reading some of the horror stories of new grads trying to get jobs, and that really sucks and I feel for those of you experiencing that, but it is not like that at all where I live. Hospitals are still wining and dining us here in the ol' Midwest, and most of my classmates already have jobs lined up for after graduation.

Specializes in pediatrics, geriatric, developmentally d.

Definitely L & D for sure if not my other choices are mother and infant, picu, or nicu. I absolutely love working with/for mother and infants! Ive worked with peds for 2 years now in a home and i love it! Ive done my share of geriatrics, psych, HH and im sure that is where i do not find myself in my nursing career. Ive seen 2 live births (sisters) and i was allowed to follow their nurses and ask questions (they were amazing!) and i just felt like i belong. i love the atmosphere and i just think the birthing process and everything about it is just amazing. Like how a little human being could grow in another human being for 9 months (or less) and survive off what the mother eats! its just amazing...then how they know their mothers voice, just everything a newborn does is an "aww" moment and the look on new mothers faces is just wonderful!

Hospice. I happen to live near the largest non profit one in the US and they do good work. If they aren't hiring, I plan to apply at All Children's Hospital (St Pete FL), with the intent of eventually working at the local Shriner's children's hospital.

Specializes in Cardiothoracics, Ophthamology.

Ophthamology for life!!!! No one thinks twice about eyes until something happens...... Then it's pretty serious! I love the patient care AND opportunity to be in surgery. Best of both worlds. And by the time we work patients through all the testing, pre-visits, surgery and post op's, you get to know them well and seeing them through the entire process is an amazing experience! Plus eyes generally don't get to "icky". I don't know where the nasty images in "the books" come from as most patients are waiting in the lobby before it gets even close to that point! Still learn something new EVERY single day.

Specializes in Case Management.

I would love to do college age nursing and start a program to educate peers about health and social justice issues. I would also like to do pediatric nursing or family health nursing or even case management. I guess I'll see which one I would end up doing after goin through my nursing program.

Same here I really am leaning towards wanting to work in the Emergency Department because it seems like it would be a challenge, fast paced, and I would be placed in exciting (even though stressful) situations everyday. The work I have been doing for clinicals so far has been all geriatrics and this field just doesn't interest me at all. I am looking forward to doing Med/Surg and OB/GYN. If the Emergencery Department doesn't work out I would love to do Labor and Delivery

Specializes in ER, Med-surg.

I want to go into Labor and Delivery or NICU. It was my dream to be an OB/GYN before I even wanted to become a nurse. When I helped my mother give birth, it was the best feeling to usher life into the world, and if I could help do that as a job, I would be eternally happy. I've dealt with women in pain for most of my life, and I'm pretty used to working with them.

I know that every other nursing student wants to work with babies too, so I'd be happy working Med/Surg or in an ICU. I've been a CNA for so long that I can't see myself working with Geriatric patients on purpose.

I have always wanted to do opthamology... but I have found no openings.

The eyes are fascinating.

Cheers!
