I don't recall seeing a thread like this and it was something someone asked me so I thought I would throw it out there.
What are your favorite types of patients??
Me, I love when I have Pre-Teen and Teen boys. I work well with teenagers in general (outside of my own) but I have had a lot of 11-16 year old male patients lately and they are probably my most favorite patients. I think because I relate well to boys first of all, having 3 of my own, and I relate to teens and I always just feel more motherly to these types.
Anyone else have a general type they tend to enjoy having more?
I really love taking care of the little old ladies who never crack a smile, demand things, and speak rudely to you
I had a little old lady like that on my last shift! She was so obnoxious, the CNAs didn't want to go in anymore. We started calling her "Miss Daisy". haha
I usually like the little old men best.
I work at a children's home, so most of our residents are kids, teenagers, and young adults with generally severe mental and physical disabilities. I've worked in geriatrics and in med/surg and other acute care, but the special needs residents are absolutely my FAVORITE kind of patients/residents to work with. Lots of personality and sense of humor, but none of the entitled attitudes and judgements that those of us who are lucky enough to be "normally abled" tend to have. My usual group is a mix of teenage boys with CP and children with trachs. Love 'em.
I love the pt's that want to have a drug/epidural free natural delivery. It's really a rewarding to be at the bedside to coach them through labor, or teach family members how to be effective coaches. Those pt's are so grateful for the support. I also enjoy the first time moms that are scared to death coming in but with emotional support and education become empowered and have great deliveries!

I was amazed at how many moms-to-be choose to have an epidural these days. I'm dating myself, but when I had my babies (ages 36 to 27) most moms had a natural delivery unless there was a problem.

1. motivated acute SCI patients in rehab
2. 'old ' SCI patients who know the drills and are expert patients - we can just concentrate on whatever brought them into hospital and have a good laugh
3. critical patients becasue you can and do make the difference
