I don't recall seeing a thread like this and it was something someone asked me so I thought I would throw it out there.
What are your favorite types of patients??
Me, I love when I have Pre-Teen and Teen boys. I work well with teenagers in general (outside of my own) but I have had a lot of 11-16 year old male patients lately and they are probably my most favorite patients. I think because I relate well to boys first of all, having 3 of my own, and I relate to teens and I always just feel more motherly to these types.
Anyone else have a general type they tend to enjoy having more?
Ok, this may sound strange, but sometimes I need a challenge to blow the cobwebs out of my brain. Highly manipulative patients pose problems that are very challenging. Containing the behavior for coworkers and loved ones can be very rewarding. I dislike psych because I don't want to do it every day.
Otherwise, my favorite patients are the tough ol' rancher, farmers, and their wives. They are usually spunky, funny, and they seldomly ever complain. They are a real treat to take!
I admitted a little old lady (used to be LOL before that meant laughing ) who had been bit by a rattlesnake- old rancher lady, tough. She'd waited several days while her leg got worse, before coming to the ED, and admitted for wound care/antibiotics. When I was doing the admission, I asked her what happened to the snake....she had hobbled back to her house, got a shotgun, and blown the snake into a million pieces- gotta love that
i totally adore obstinate, irritable, elderly ladies...
you know, the ones that are tiny, frail looking and will throw a book at you as you walk out the room.
i just can't get enough of them...i think it's because i see that in my future, and i wonder who's going to try and manage me?
now there's a nightmare coming, for whoever.
i had this 85yo female copd pt- late stage.
her skin was leathered and wrinkly- she looked like she was 100...
and weighed 60 lbs, tops...
and still smoked.
one time she was screaming at an aide, being her usual incorrigible self, when her favorite dr. walked in.
she instantly changed from monster to coy and flirtatious, literally batting her eyes, chin tucked and smiling...almost like she was posing.
this woman had to be one of my all time favorites...
she was feisty in life, and feisty in death.
not fearful nor meek, but comparable to giving death, the finger followed by a raspy f.u.

Babies, toddlers, and up to elementary school-aged kids. I like kids that are still kids, not the ones who are transitioning to adulthood (or think they are!). That may change once my own kid is older (he's 9 now).
One of the best things about my current job is that I get to work with my favorite age group -- I work with newborns to 5 year olds (or sometimes a little older) in the foster care system.

This is one of the neatest things I've ever heard!!! It sound like a neighbor of ours whose hand was crushed by a trailer hitch. He just smiled and asked for a jack.

Wow,never thought about this before......I love the young men too. My kids are boys too. It is easy for me to give them my all. But I fantasize about surgery as well....."wow, look at the insides of us all!"....and also you get to see the emotional insides of the surgeons who have the burden of God.
