:nurse:Just curious as to see what are people favorite specailty area is on this board.

I personally love geriatrics and correctional nursing. Geriatric is my number one because it seem that SOME people forget about them when it comes to nursing, as MOST-not all, are interested in acute care nursing. Also, I like correctional nursing becasue I have seen some health care professinals treat people in jail/prison wrong because they are in jail/prison, which is unfair in my eyes. Just looking to hear you guys favorite specialty and why?

Adrenaline junkie here so I bet you can guess

I'm not a nurse but thinking very hard on getting my bsn as a second degree. I'm not an adrenaline loving person so what type of nursing would be for me? I thought about public health, case management, or patient education coordinator. What do you nurses out there think? Thinking of the ER and ICU scares me I can't deny. I don't think I'll like that fast pace nursing. oh and this is an interesting post.

case management jobs usually require you to have bedside experience. You may be interested in working in a clinic setting since it is usually low stress, as some claim it is like doing office/clercial duties. You room patients, obtain vital signs, maybe draw up blood, or pass a med here and there. Great sense of satisfaction, as you are making a difference within a community.

I really loved the ER. I was not a fan of the ICU. I got a job in Peds and I am really liking it. Teens are my favorite patients. I think I would love a pediatric ER so I can have both. It would be awesome to work in a Level 1 ER. Although I love the fast pace of the ER and the variety of cases, I also enjoy getting to know my patients and the follow up.

I would also love to be a SANE nurse.

I did clinicals in the local Jail and really enjoyed it. It was like a constant adrenaline rush not ever knowing what was going to happen and you just notice your senses on alert constantly expecting the unexpected. I walked into this one Pod and like literally instantaneously my peripheral vision increased and I could see what was going on around the whole pod at once. Very cool.

I have lived my life in a constant survival mode though so I relate best to the craziness and am able to keep my calm in the midst of it all.

Specializes in Flight, ER, Transport, ICU/Critical Care.

Flight - rotorwing rocks!

You gotta know your stuff - be able to be flexible and adapt to any number of situations.

It's just you and your paramedic partner -- and pilot - someone has to drive.... ;)

There is a lot of autonomy - kinda independent assessment, interventions, medications, response. We have to have a great skill set and be absolutely rock-soild in assessment.

Most rotor - 24 hour/shifts x 8-10 month.

Sure the hours are long and when you look at an hour to hour it seems less per hour - but, I averaged taking care of approx 20 patients a month over the course of a year. I got plenty of down time to read, study, sleep. And I always made over 60K in any spot and in a resource spot I was in the mid 70's.

Goota have experience and keep up lots of credentials - but, IMO - the best job in nursing.

Bonus! Great views - sunrise and sunsets from the helicopter are amazing!

:hpygrp: :hpygrp:: :hpygrp:

I also really like ER at times and some ICU spots are great as well.

The best thing about nursing - OPTIONS! Explore them and find what you love!

Good LUCK!

Specializes in Critical Care.

I love the sweet little old ladies and gents. One elderly man thanked me for "mothering" him when I tucked him in at noc. I'm not a mother in life, I was never pregnant and I have no children, so I guess I tend to "mother" my patients.

Also I love little old ladies, they remind me of my grandmother. I just took care of a little old lady that didn't speak english who was scared and having nightmares and her daughter was so sweet and comforting to her. She hugged her and watched over her and talked to her in her native language, very protective of her. Reminds me of how I felt and was toward my dear grandma and godmother! It is so good to see when families love and dote on their elderly family members. It makes you feel good to see that and to know they are not alone when they are sick and frail.

Telephone Triage is my FAVVVV!!!!!:redbeathe
