What is considered the weekend shift for 7p-7a?

Published

For nurses who work 12 hour nights, 7p-7a, and have a weekend obligation, what is considered the weekend? I'm sure Sat 7p to Sun morning 7a is considered the weekend, but is Friday 7p to Sat 7a, or Sun 7p-Mon 7a the other weekend shift?

If you are required to work that particular weekend, what do your hours look like?

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I had no idea it varied so much. @MassED: that's not nice. Hopefully you at least get differential for that whole time.

In my facility, weekends are from Fri 3p to Mon 7a.

This has been a never-ending battle on the last few units I worked and I don't think anyone will ever agree. The first hospital I worked at considered Friday and Saturday night the weekend. Personally, I think this is how it should be since most of the shift (12a-7a) is worked on Saturday and Sunday.

Friday Saturday Sunday

Weekend pay for us begins at 3pm on Friday and goes to midnight on Sunday. Management considers day shift to work a two day weekend (Saturday and Sunday only) while nights works a three day weekend--even though nights only gets one additional hour of weekend pay. I've always thought this was unfair as we have a policy that states if you call off on a weekend you have to work the following weekend when you should be scheduled off. Also, they don't include Friday as a guarantee on your weekend off, so if you work nights and call off Friday before the weekend you are off then you have to make it up (and can be scheduled the next Fri, Sat, or Sun) but if you work day shift it's the same as calling off on a Tuesday.

The hospital I work at uses Saturday and Sunday. The nursing home I used to work at required everyone to work a three day weekend and gave a choice of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday or Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

At my place, weekend pay starts 7p on Friday and ends 7a Monday.

Weekend night diff is 1.67x base pay; weekend day diff is 1.5x base pay.

I work weekend option, 7p-7a Fri & Sat. Others work Sat/Sun, others work 3 nights one weekend and 1 night the next.

For non-weekend option people, I think the requirement is one weekend per 6-week schedule. I don't know about hospitalwide, this is just for my unit.

Our weekend differential begins at 2300 on Friday and ends at 2300 on Sunday. I'm 7P-7A and my weekend obligation is Friday night into Saturday and Saturday night into Sunday.
