I tried googling an answer to your question without much luck. I believe that the hospital models are changing due to the economics involved. Back in the day, large hospitals, like Mass General had several thousands of beds but, just as airliner size is "downsizing" due to the changing economy, I think that hospital size is also changing. Interesting question. Maybe someone with hospital admin background will give a definitive answer.
We have just under 700 beds and treat over 450,000 patients a year (includes, day surgeries, outpatient clinics, etc).
We're also a designated treatment hospital for parts of Canada's Far North.
Large depends on your perspective like loriangel said.
My hospital (size wise) is probably small compared to some of the major US and European hospitals.
Or a freaking huge nightmare to those in smaller hospitals.
