What changes would you like to see from administration?

Published

I'm going into administration and I want to know the nurses viewpoints on how their administrators are running things. What realistic changes would you like to see? How can we be more involved? What can we do that would help you?

If that's the case, you're not smart enough to be in admin.

Yikes. :(

It's quite alright. I understand how some view administrators. I knew that when I made the choice to take on this career (I've worked under plenty of bad ones myself), it's one reason I chose to go into administration. I want to try and make a difference.

No, my reaction was simply because the quoted post was really harsh and kind of mean, IMO. I don't think that post, nor my reaction, had anything to do with people's feelings on administrators.

And FWIW, I'm finishing up my MSN in Leadership because I too want to go into administration. I've had some really good role models in my nursing career.

COMPLETELY uncalled for!

There is a specific forum here at Allnurses.com https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/ for students to post requests for assistance. Posts in other fora, particularly without clear explanation of the post as a request to assist with an academic assignment, are indeed poor netiquette.

If what you have described here is a graduate-level assignment in an MBA program, I am embarrassed for you. That is not hostility towards you -- rather, it is my opinion of your instructor and by extension, your program and your school.

Let's recall a basic tenet of human subject research -- informed consentto participate.

Please don't let the harshness of a few "turn you off" to message boards. I see the views of both the OP and the previous posters but there is no reason for rudeness and that should not even have been used. There is a way of getting a point across while still being classy.

Being a somewhat new nurse myself, the nurses on this site have truly helped me and encouraged me as a new grad and I enjoy reading through the post at the end of my day. There is a lot of knowledge contained in these posts on allnurses and I consider it an invaluable resource.

Just take everything said here, use it for your report, and still come back and peruse at you leisure. It's an awesome site with amazing nurses!

I'm really hoping that veteran nurses will still see the post now that it's been moved. As that's who I really need to answer the questions, not nursing students.

I'm also hoping that the few individuals that were rude were able to relieve the stress that they had by criticizing a complete stranger's intelligence in an online forum, and that it at least made them feel a little better about themselves. I don't let things like that bother me. It's the internet and the rude ones do pop up.

Those that took the time to respond with actual answers, will definitely help in the type of administrator I will become, and I'm thankful for that. They gave great advice for someone going into administration (and some gave great advice for those new to message boards). A lot of things that have been said will definitely stick with me, and hopefully some of the issues that were brought up, I will be able to change.

Thank you for moving the post to the appropriate place. Do the veteran nurses still respond to questions here?

I am a veteran nurse - 43 years' worth, thank you. I have worked with good, bad and indifferent administrators ... I already gave you my answer as to what makes the difference.

As for rude responses, well rude is as rude does. You chose to post your homework with no disclosure or effort to find the appropriate venue.

Now you condescend to reprimand us for calling you on it. Some of us object to being exploited as a resource by a complete stranger who can't even be bothered to get a clue. Plus, we are apparently supposed to be all sunshine and lollipops about it. I don't freakin' think so.

I'm not stressed. I'm not bitter. I don't need therapy. If you actually read what nurses have had to say here over the years, you would find many of us find our jobs made significantly more difficult by administrators who assume we are idiot children who work for them. The most useful thing I can offer you is the opportunity to question that assumption.

Thank you for your response. I read your original post and I thought it was insightful as well. I'm not arguing with anyone here. I'm just trying to do my best to finish this assignment. Thankfully a moderator directed my original post to the correct place to do that.

I'm sorry you are dealing with those issues with your administration. My hope is that I learn a few things from the nurses before taking on an administrator role myself. I think I have accomplished that by the responses posted.

I'm also sorry if you feel exploited, but my assignment was to get on a listserve, such as this, post questions pertaining to my career choice, and write a report on the type (ex: angry, rude, correct answers, quality answers, etc.) of responses I've received. As a new person to message boards, I found out the long way to correctly go about it. Now it's in the correct spot.
