What changes would you like to see from administration?

Published

I'm going into administration and I want to know the nurses viewpoints on how their administrators are running things. What realistic changes would you like to see? How can we be more involved? What can we do that would help you?

Proper ettiquette dictates that you announce that when you intially post. Also, to tell us what YOU think the answers might be. Did your instructor specifically tell you to poll on an internet website where you may or may not get actualy nurses to respond or were you to interview face to face people you can verify are indeed nurses?

This is a homework assignment. We have to write a two page paper on the responses that we got. :)

Then why didn't you say so in the first place?

This is a homework assignment. I'm not trying to fool anyone. The assignment was to go onto a nursing board and ask a question that will relate to your career position, then write a two page report on the responses you get. I'm sorry if that upsets anyone. I'm just trying to complete the assignment. And yes, I am going into administration within the year, I'm finishing my last few classes. All of your responses have definitely made me think of how unappreciated you all are. Hopefully it's something that I will be able to change.

Because it didn't occur to me. For that, I apologize.

Yes, the assignment was to join a listserv, such as allnurses and openly discuss a topic. I'm truly sorry if I've overstepped any netiquette bounds, I'm just trying to complete my assignment.

My first nurse manager did that. When we were short, or when we were slammed, she'd show up in her scrubs and take a labor patient.

My current manager and supervisors do this. If it's crazy they're there taking patients regardless of shift, going to deliveries where we need NICU, etc. When we had our big Ebola scare, they asked for volunteers to be on the team of people who would care for a baby of an Ebola patient *if* we ever had one show up at our door. They were the first four volunteers.

When we have bad things happen on the unit - either related to patient care or personal trauma (we recently had a staff member die suddenly) - they are on-the-spot with EAP and the chaplains there to help us deal.

They have clear expectations of us but they give us reasonable ways to meet those expectations. Example: we have to attend a certain # of staff meetings per year, but there's none of this crap of one staff meeting at 2pm that night shift is also required to attend. They have several meetings which include night shift and weekend hours, and none of them last long. 30min, tops. Our manager says what she needs to say and that's it. Any questions she holds til the end and those who want to stay and talk more can, but everyone else is free to go.

I'll work hard for people who don't expect anything of me that they are unwilling to do themselves.

These darn schools need to STOP just sending people to allnurses.com or other such forums for answers and to do their homework for them. The schools should teach their students online forum etiquette and make sure they understand that they should be upfront with their reasons and intentions with their questions. If this were done properly, such requests would be much more well-received and people more likely to want to help.

No one wants to be tricked or convinced to do any student's homework or research for them. That is something you (OP) might want to share with your fellow students so we don't get innundated with such requests from the same class. It's happened before, many times, and this is why folks here are leary.

I wish you good luck in your studies..

I can see that they are leery and very judgmental (due to past experiences I'm sure), I feel bad as I wasn't trying to trick anyone, or have them do my homework for me, the assignment is to ask a question and write a report on the responses I get. I will make sure to put your exact comment in my report for the professor. I thought the assignment was odd myself. I'm very upset that I have been met with what I feel as hostility from a few, and I sincerely thank you for explaining why that might be. Now I know.

Thank you for the wish for good luck and your response.

If that's the case, you're not smart enough to be in admin.

Because it didn't occur to me. For that, I apologize.

As many others have mentioned. Appropriate staffing, pay, and decent benefits will go a LLLLOOOOOONNNNGGGGG way in retaining excellent staff. In the end keeping good staff is worth the extra $$$ up front. You will save a ton of $$$ by not constantly hiring and training new staff.

Wow. I have apologized for not clarifying exactly WHY I was asking the questions. I do believe you can put your pitchfork away now. Just because I didn't state my questions the way you would have preferred or started out with what you thought I should have, holds no credibility for me being able to function as an administrator. I don't use message boards, ever, and this right here is one reason why. I wouldn't even be on this if it wasn't for having to write a report on the responses I get to my questions. My assignment specifically stated to get on a listserv, such as allnurses, ask questions that pertain to your career choice, and then write a two page report on the responses you get. Again, I'm sorry if that upsets anyone, and it will be mentioned in my report. I'm just trying to complete what I was assigned to do.
