I know for a fact that a lot of the responses I got are valid complaints about administration and the way they handle things, because I've dealt with it myself. As far as the posters being "actual nurses", it won't really matter for this assignment, as I have to write a report on the type of responses I've received, not whether I thought the respondents were licensed. Also, I do have doubt that people who aren't nurses would waste their time trying to give a well thought out response. Anyone can lie on the internet, but I don't believe that is the case here. Why do you ask?

Thank you for your response. I read your original post and I thought it was insightful as well. I'm not arguing with anyone here. I'm just trying to do my best to finish this assignment. Thankfully a moderator directed my original post to the correct place to do that. I'm sorry you are dealing with those issues with your administration. My hope is that I learn a few things from the nurses before taking on an administrator role myself. I think I have accomplished that by the responses posted. I'm also sorry if you feel exploited, but my assignment was to get on a listserve, such as this, post questions pertaining to my career choice, and write a report on the type (ex: angry, rude, correct answers, quality answers, etc.) of responses I've received. As a new person to message boards, I found out the long way to correctly go about it. Now it's in the correct spot.

I'm really hoping that veteran nurses will still see the post now that it's been moved. As that's who I really need to answer the questions, not nursing students. I'm also hoping that the few individuals that were rude were able to relieve the stress that they had by criticizing a complete stranger's intelligence in an online forum, and that it at least made them feel a little better about themselves. I don't let things like that bother me. It's the internet and the rude ones do pop up. Those that took the time to respond with actual answers, will definitely help in the type of administrator I will become, and I'm thankful for that. They gave great advice for someone going into administration (and some gave great advice for those new to message boards). A lot of things that have been said will definitely stick with me, and hopefully some of the issues that were brought up, I will be able to change.

It's quite alright. I understand how some view administrators. I knew that when I made the choice to take on this career (I've worked under plenty of bad ones myself), it's one reason I chose to go into administration. I want to try and make a difference.

I mentioned in another post that I've been in healthcare for 17 years, I understand fully how bad administration can be (another point I should have mentioned in the original post), it's one of the many reasons I chose to go into this career field. Really good advice, thank you. I wondered about this assignment from the start, but it has to be completed. I think most don't realize that I'm not looking for them to DO my homework for me. I had to ask the questions to get responses. Now I have to write a report on the type of responses I got, not necessarily what each individual said. I'm not even sure how it has gotten to the point it has, with most being so hostile, but it has definitely turned me off of message boards for the future. If something like this is assigned to me again I'll at least know what to do differently.

Yes, all the comments will be mentioned, as that's what the report is about....your comments to the questions originally asked. As I have previously stated, the assignment was to join a listserv, ask questions pertaining to your career choice, and then write a two page report on the responses you get. It's not a threat, and embarrass you into submission? Submission of what exactly? There is no "hidden agenda". I'm sorry you perceived it as that. Thanks for your response.

Hey thanks, it's alright. It's been mentioned to me why people here are leery of things like this and I can understand it. Since my intelligence has been brought into this, I have worked in healthcare for 17 years, taking a few years to be a stay at home mother to 3 (the last of which is entering school this fall). I made the decision to go back to school to fulfill my goals. I have done so while raising my 3 children, I've maintained a 3.8 GPA (most of which has been nursing classes). I'm currently working towards an MBA and sitting for my states administrator license exam. I've worked very, very hard to be where I am currently. I'm just sad to see so much negativity and judgment thrown at a complete stranger.

Wow. I have apologized for not clarifying exactly WHY I was asking the questions. I do believe you can put your pitchfork away now. Just because I didn't state my questions the way you would have preferred or started out with what you thought I should have, holds no credibility for me being able to function as an administrator. I don't use message boards, ever, and this right here is one reason why. I wouldn't even be on this if it wasn't for having to write a report on the responses I get to my questions. My assignment specifically stated to get on a listserv, such as allnurses, ask questions that pertain to your career choice, and then write a two page report on the responses you get. I can see that they are leery and very judgmental (due to past experiences I'm sure), I feel bad as I wasn't trying to trick anyone, or have them do my homework for me, the assignment is to ask a question and write a report on the responses I get. I will make sure to put your exact comment in my report for the professor. I thought the assignment was odd myself. I'm very upset that I have been met with what I feel as hostility from a few, and I sincerely thank you for explaining why that might be. Now I know.
