What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Already under fire for high pay despite big investment losses, the pension system for Ohio's retired teachers lost between $27 million and $40 million when Silicon Valley Bank failed last weekend. That appears to be by far the biggest investment by a public pension system in the United States.

The losses follow a nearly $10 million loss last year when cryptocurrency platform FTX failed, according to the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, a group that represents pension system members.

In SVB's case, this ended up being a big problem when its extra billions were invested in Treasury bonds with long-term maturities and the Federal Reserve raised interest rates, which in turn hurt the value of government bonds. And with the tech sector struggling recently, more depositors took their money out.

Last week, SVB said it was forced to sell part of its bond holdings at a loss of $1.8 billion, leading to a run on the bank. Federal regulators took control of the bank on Friday.

"They can do an external operation against U.S. or Western interests abroad in under six months with little to no warning,” Army Gen. Michael Kurilla, the head of U.S. Central Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.  The general later specified that the group known as ISIS-Khorasan or ISIS-K could potentially conduct attacks in Asia or in Europe. It will have greater difficulty attacking the U.S. homeland directly, he said in response to questions.

Critics of President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from Afghanistan – resulting in catastrophic evacuation in the Summer of 2021 – have centered on continued White House assertions that it can conduct "over the horizon" attacks to defend against terrorist threats from Afghanistan despite not having an enduring troop presence on the ground.

Kurilla confirmed Thursday that the U.S. has only conducted one such strike since the withdrawal – a matter of public knowledge. But he appeared to surprise some on the dais with vague details about two other "non-kinetic" operations involving several global U.S. military headquarters that he said disrupted terrorist operations in Afghanistan. He said he would provide further details in a closed-door classified session after the committee's open hearing on Thursday.

It sounds like Biden put a capable man in authority over military interests in that region.

Now, an international team of virologists, genomicists, and evolutionary biologists may have finally found crucial data to help fill that knowledge gap. A new analysis of genetic sequences collected from the market shows that raccoon dogs being illegally sold at the venue could have been carrying and possibly shedding the virus at the end of 2019. It's some of the strongest support yet, experts told me, that the pandemic began when SARS-CoV-2 hopped from animals into humans, rather than in an accident among scientists experimenting with viruses.

This was published today in The Atlantic.  I only have access to a few paragraphs of it but it serves as proof that we haven't seen the end of this story of Covid's origins yet.  Oddly enough, the answer will not arise from politicians!
