What career did you have before nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

And how long did you stay in that job? I am a retail and restaurant recruiter. I have been working from home for the past five years. Before that, I worked in the brokerage field. But I have always wanted to be a nurse. I will be starting my very first prerequisite (Chem 1032) in January 2012. I was advised to take one class at a time. I figure it will take me from start to finish a good 3-4 years. I am 45 years old. How about you? :D

.

Excited to do something real and of value along with being a glorified Cinderella to silly bosses.

Fixed it for you. :D

Specializes in PICU, ICU, Hospice, Mgmt, DON.
I'd click on the little "kudo button" on your post but one was not there.

Quite a background, you have.

Thanks, I was trying to convey that although I was not one of those people who always wanted to become a nurse..in fact I never did...nursing has been a good career for me, it's paid the bills and I have been able to work in a variety of venues so I have never been bored...maybe frustrated many times..but never bored!

Specializes in Gerontology, Med surg, Home Health.

I managed a Cumberland Farms. Dreadful company. Regional manager was piggish and told me when I quit he knew I wouldn't last because I was too smart!:coollook: Was going to go to secretarial school...took the test they gave me. Was supposed to put in the correct capital letters. I fixed the punctuation and cleaned up the syntax. Was told I was too smart for the school. Tried to get a job at the local newspaper since I had a degree in English, but I didn't know how to type. So at the old age of 26, off I went to nursing school because it was a recession proof job. I didn't want to be a nurse before I started school. After a few weeks in school, I couldn't imagine doing anything else....well Queen of Spain, but that job was taken. Almost 30 years later it was still one of the best decisions I ever made.:nurse:

Before nursing, was a respiratory therapist for 10 yrs. Great preparation for working in ICU! Before that, worked in high tech for 14+ yrs.

I was driving a bus, working in advertisement for a shipping corporation and owned a pottery business...all at the same time! Went back to school a third time and graduated with a BSN at age 53. Never looked back. So far, nursing has been good for me.

Warts and all (and there are many) it is an exquisite profession.

What other profession can make you go home, shut the blinds, turn off the phone, whimper on your couch and suck the lifeblood out of you on a daily basis, yet somehow, mysteriously... replace it with something better?

I was a floral designer for 15 years and owned my own business for seven of those years while being a full time mom. I started nursing school at 39 and became an RN at 43. While in school I worked as a nanny for a little over a year and as a personal assistant to cognitively challenged individuals for a year and half.

Mom first always!!!

Mom:)

Yes, I am a mom too! Hardest job in the world! But soooooo worth it!!!! :)

Specializes in nursing education.

Nursing is my first career, unless you count all the crappy jobs I did to put myself through school- waitress, hotel maid were the main two. I was a traditional student, got my BSN in nursing right out of high school. Seems like I'm in the minority here!

Chiropractor, Obama Care is the death to private practice!
