What is this called? (stupid question)

Published

One of my friends is having her first baby and the rest of us were talking about our deliveries and such. We were telling her about the best invention in the world and we couldn't think of what it was called. SO I need you help so she doesn't go into the hospital calling it the sprayer thing.

After we delivered in our restroom was a thing attached to the wall that would spray warm water on your bottom after you went to the restroom. IT was kind of a cross between a shower head and toliet paper.

Thanks for answering my VERY stupid question. We don't want her sounding like a weirdo, so she can enjoy it after she has her baby. I remember using it after my boys were born and it was WONDERFUL.

is it a sitz bath???

Sounds like a bidet to me. They are very popular in Europe.

Kinda, but I thought sitz baths weren't attached to the wall. Aren't they a bottle w/ a squirt nozzle on top that you used over the toliet. This is attached to the wall that you use over the toliet. It has the "soap" and warm water already mixed. YOu just put on a "sprayer wand", turn it on, and use it.

I warned you that it was stupid question. There were 5 of us trying to figure out what this was called and nobody could agree on what it was called.

Yeah, it's a sitz bath. There are several different kinds, one of which is either over a toliet, or by itself in the bathroom. Funny story: Way before I was a nurse, after I delievered my 1st baby, my nurse took me down the hall to a bathroom. She had me sit on this toliet thingy and turned it on. She SAID she would come back for me when it was done. But she didn't. The water started getting really cold. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to or not. So I just sat there (what a dork). Finally, after about an hour, she came in with another patient and found me sitting there. She said, "OMG, I forgot all about you being in here!" Then she told me what the string hanging down on the wall was for - it was the call light, but I didn't know - I thought it was some kind of alarm.

I worked briefly in a hospital that had this contraption. It is called a surgagator, and it is like a power washer for the perineum. You got a wand and it hooked up to the wall hosing and you sprayed yourself with warm water.

We call it a sitz bath. It is wonderful, especially if you've had an episotomy.

Thanks for the information. She is having her baby at a different hospital than we had ours, so we wanted to make sure that she knew what to ask for. I had a episotomy with my first son and tore w/ my second son and that helped me so much. I would have never left the bathroom if they would have let me. It helped so much with the perineum pain that I hated to leave the hopital without it.

She is actually really excited about using it after we all spoke so highly of it. All of us feel like that is one of the things that helped with the pain (that and the ice pack pads they give you) more than the pain pills.

Erin

another good idea for episiotomy would be to fill the bath tub with warm water and a few drops of antispectic solution in it and sit in it for sometime. it did wonders for me

peri bottles work just as well really.

True SBE, but the wall mounted Sitz can run forever. A peri bottle holds what 240cc? The ones we use are awesome, when they function properly and the kits come with tubing and parts so that the pts can take them home and connect them from their bathroom sink to their toilets. I know it works, I used it a lot after both my deliveries. And really, even if it did nothing more than feel good, I'd still endorse it :)
